Unit Happenings

Unit 34 Annual Welcome Back Party

We had so much fun at our annual welcome back party that we forgot to take any photos. So this is the sunrise after everyone left. About 40 people attended the party and enjoyed good food, good beverages, and great conversations.

Unit 34 Honors Our Veterans

Let us renew our national promise to fulfill our sacred obligations to our veterans and their families, who have sacrificed so much so that we can live free. On this Veterans Day, Unit 34 remembered the service of our veterans by displaying an American flag on all 56 mailboxes in the unit.

Unit 34 Toy Show

Bob Young

Unit 34’s Christmas Animated Toy Show is from Wednesday, Dec. 1 to Friday, Dec. 31. If you plan to look at the lights and decorations this holiday season, with or without grandchildren, please be sure to stop over and enjoy our Christmas Animated Toy Show. Your grandchildren will love it. The shows are non-stop every day during December. If you are part of a group that visits homes to sing, stop over and let us entertain you.

Here’s how it works: Every mailbox in Unit 34 (56) has at least one Christmas animated toy display. Animated toys include Santa, Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Rudolph, the Peanuts, the Grinch, and many others, plus a few new characters are added every year. Some of the animated toys light up; all sing and dance. The display itself will be lit up as much as possible, so you can enjoy it during the day and after dark. This is a do-it-yourself display, so visit at your convenience. Instructions are displayed on each toy. Press the “try me” sticker. Performers will sing and dance for you.

Directions: On the Tuscany side, take Clubhouse Drive to Sarival, and turn right on Sarival to Monterey. Take a right on Monterey to 162nd Lane. You have arrived. If you have any questions, contact the Unit 34 contact, Bob Young, at [email protected] or 314-614-3058.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa. Enjoy our show.

Unit 38 Get-Together

Pat Kaer and Maggie Philippon

On Oct. 25, more than 40 neighbors from Unit 38 gathered for a Drinks in the Driveway event at the home of George and Maggie Philippon. The event was also hosted by Unit 38 coordinator Caryn Brett. This was our first get-together since the COVID-19 restrictions and a grand opportunity to see old friends once again and welcome new neighbors.

Standing in the front row (left to right) are Cindy Janssen, Georgie Wood, Kathie McNeil, Barb Kripps, Deb Chrisman, Sharon Gould, Pat Chaback, and Linda Watters. Kneeling is Ruth Clark. In the second row are Jean Gill, Suzie Unklesbay, and the hostess, Pat West.

Unit 43A Book Club

Kathie McNeil and Pat West

After over a year of meeting via Zoom because of COVID and its variants, our book club was very excited to meet, finally, in person. The October meeting was hosted by Pat West. She chose the book The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave. Much of the book took place in Austin, Texas, so Pat gave our meeting a Texas theme. She asked everyone to grab their cowgirl hat, and she provided Tex-Mex snacks, “Austin” cider, and Texans’ favorite dessert, pecan pie. Everyone really enjoyed themselves, and members were especially happy to see each other in person.

Unit 44’s Fun Halloween Pool Party

Twenty-seven residents of Unit 44 enjoyed some spooktacular food, drinks, and music at the Oasis Pool in October.

Special attendees included Count Dracula, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Beach Bum, Great Pumpkin, Richard Simmons, Leopard Woman, and Mr. In-N-Out Burger.

This fun event was organized and hosted by Mark and Laurie Eichkorn (aka Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head), who grilled some delicious cheeseburgers to coincide with many fantastic shared appetizers, side dishes, and desserts.

After dinner, we divided into two groups to play a fun game of Name That Halloween Tune. Team 1 scored a convincing victory over Team 2, thanks to their expert music answer man, Dan Harris (aka Mr. In-N-Out Burger). It’s amazing how many memorable songs have a Halloween theme! Then, we were all entertained by a solo vocal performance by Arlys Oesterling, one of the newest members of the PebbleCreek Singers.

As our neighborhood prepares for some fun, upcoming holiday activities, the good times continue in Unit 44!

Unit 52 October Luncheon

Liz Gibson

The Ladies Who Lunch of Unit 52 enjoyed their second get-together of the year on Oct. 14, at noon at the Times Square Italian Restaurant. It was hosted by Social Committee member Lois Valletti, and the group was a nice mix of original and newer unit members.

The “party unit” is looking forward to a number of events still in 2021, under the direction of Social Chair Rhae Jean Magnuson.

Unit 54 Welcome Back Party

Barbara Dunson

Unit 54 came out of COVID retirement with a welcome back party on Nov. 6 at the Oasis Pool. It was a great turnout of residents who had not seen or been in contact with neighbors for well over a year. The unit is 82 homes; full now with recent resales this past year. Plans for social events are in the works for both the Women’s Luncheon and Men’s Breakfast. With our potluck of Fry’s fried chicken and ham from Mary O’Neil, along with homemade salads, mac ‘n cheese, appetizers, famous sausage/peppers, and loads of sweet treats, no one went home hungry. Thank you, Unit 54, for all your participation.

Unit 58 Men’s Breakfast

Ed Raker

The Unit 58 Men’s Breakfast group got off with a bang for another session on Oct. 20. This time we enjoyed the cuisine and great service at the Eagle’s Nest dining room. We had 15 members in attendance, slinging jabs, jokes, and lies with each other, and otherwise enjoying the camaraderie.

Our group has no agenda other than fun, and there is plenty of that. With the diminishing concern about COVID at present, we are likely to convene monthly in the immediate future.

Unit 61 Men’s Breakfast

Paul Stuart Sr.

The Unit 61 men just had our first breakfast in five years. We will be planning these on a monthly basis. Our breakfast was at Eagle’s Nest, whose team did a great job. Thanks to Tracy Anderson!

Unit 62A

Toni Erickson

October presented several activities for getting together in Unit 62A! The fun started off with Books and Booze at the home of Toni Erickson. Ten gals offered up their recommendations of books read since the last meeting. The evening (held every other month) allows attendees to exchange or pass on books of interest.

Several Cardinals fans made their way to the stadium on Oct. 10 and enjoyed tailgating hosted by Lynn and Bruce Banks prior to the win over the San Francisco 49ers. All brought a dish to share to complement the game day brats and hamburgers. The day was complete with the W!

Steve Gonzales drove his ‘32 Ford Deuce Coupe to the monthly Men’s Breakfast that was held at Times Square on Litchfield and Camelback. Steve permitted the guys to not only gawk at his prize possession vehicle that morning.

The Ladies’ Lunch was held at Carpella Crepes Café in Avondale. Thirteen ladies (Marilyn Coates, Judy Meservey, Laurie Wyman, Joan Ausman, Paula Hupka, Joanne Wrout, Renee Fisher, Cathe Pruyn, Julie Greenbank, Toni Erickson, Janet Hensp, Lynn Banks, and Debbie Clinkinbeard) got a chance to catch up and reminisce over a crepe of their choice.

October was double the fun at the Halloween happy hour hosted by Laurie Wyman. 62A residents shared food, beverages, and fellowship while being entertained with a few of the costumes people “rose up to the occasion” to wear. In doing so, Sharon Pucelik won a $25 Amazon gift card with her fabulous and scary witch costume.
