Unit Happenings

Unit 5 Update

Maggi Maas

On March 6, 30 residents of Unit 5 met for lunch at Eagle’s Nest. The restaurant did a nice job with the St. Patrick’s Day menu. With new and longtime residents meeting and mixing, there was lots of great conversation. We are looking forward to many future events.

Congratulations to Sam Fassler on volunteering to serve as Unit 5 Kare Bear representative. Way to go, Sam!

Unit 8 Book Group

The February meeting of the Unit 8 Book Club was hosted by Hilary Coltman, where Educated by Tara Westover was evaluated by the group. Anyone in Unit 8, full or part-time, interested in participating in the monthly discussion group, please contact Jane Holdcroft at [email protected] for the 2020 book list, meeting dates, and places.

Unit 37 Ladies Leap Day Brunch

Peggy Wilkerson

Unit 37 enjoyed the extra day of the year at the Leap Day Brunch held once again at the residence of Peggy Wilkerson. This was the third quadrennial event hosted by Peggy that originally began in 2012. While guests enjoyed the nice sunny day, the brunch started with mimosas served on the back patio. Each guest brought a dish to share. Tables were beautifully decorated with a spring theme—flowered tablecloths and fresh flowers. Each guest was presented with a yummy flower designed sugar cookie to take home. Old and new residents were introduced. Good food and great conversations were enjoyed by all! This was such a special event and we are already looking forward to our next Leap Day Brunch in 2024!

Unit 38 Taco Bar

Unit 38 celebrated the beginning of the spring season with a taco bar potluck on Feb. 16. Members of the community gathered in the covered area at the Oasis Pool for a casual get-together. The weather was surprisingly pleasant. Each person brought their own drink and something to contribute to a taco bar. What was going to be a simple meal to share turned into a feast with appetizers, side dishes, and dessert in addition to beef, pork, and chicken tacos. Unit 38 Rep. Caryn Brett planned the event.

Unit 40 Golf Outing

Christopher Mucha

On the afternoon of Sunday, March 8, 26 members of Unit 40 participated in a golf outing and dinner at PebbleCreek. While the overall number was down from last year’s event, golfers braved the windy conditions and showed off their finest shots on Tuscany Falls West front nine. Closest to the pin honors on hole No. 3 were:

Women: first place, Susan Gavin; second place, Marianne Boechler

Men: first place, Bill Gavin; second place Randy Prinz

All enjoyed cocktails and a buffet dinner, provided by the Catering Department in the Chianti Room. Additional raffle prizes (bottles of wine) were awarded to the following: Warren Fast, Marie Ballinger, Nick Boechler, Maureen Campbell, Sheryl Henke-Shenton, Jim Calder, and Joe Lacaeyse. Unit 40’s neighbors continue to enjoy a variety of social events during the year that celebrate friendship and the closeness of our community.

Thanks also to Golf Operations, which diligently worked to integrate our event into a tight set of golfing tee times, while still allowing other PC residents to fill available slots that afternoon.

Unit 43B

Susan Knox Wilson

Pursuant to the Bylaws of the PebbleCreek Villas, Article II. Section 5, Board Secretary Susan Knox Wilson announces the notice of the annual meeting. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chianti Room, Tuscany Falls Clubhouse.

Unit 51 Luncheon

Janet Miazga

Feb. 13 found fifteen of Unit 51’s lovely ladies enjoying a delicious lunch at Tommy Bahama’s in Kierland Commons, Scottsdale. Our gracious hostesses, Bevy Hogan and Jennifer Yelvington, did a fantastic job of decorating our private dining room with Valentine’s decor, from colorful flower bouquets and red garland on the tables to heart decals on the windows and balloons in the air – the atmosphere was very festive! They surprised each of us with a variety of candy hearts, a sprinkled cookie, a handmade napkin holder, and a small vial of bubble liquid – we all celebrated the occasion by blowing small bubbles around the room, like happy children would do. Some of the women had gone early to shop the stores at Kierland, finding great buys. All in all, it was a memorable Valentine’s ladies’ luncheon for Unit 51!

Unit 52 Brunch

Liz Gibson

Unit 52 residents enjoyed a sold-out brunch on Sunday, Feb. 9 at Eagle’s Nest. The food and service were great, as always. It was terrific to have a great mix of new residents and those of us which have been around since the development of the unit 12 or so years ago.

Our thanks to Rhae Jean Magnuson, social chair, and her committee for organizing what is becoming a popular annual event. The committee is hard at work planning the upcoming events for the year. We have four each year, which are always great fun and diversified.

Unit 53 Ladies Get-Together

Sandy Stephens

Susan Jackson hosted twenty-six women from Unit 53 for a Gal’s Get-Together Thursday, Feb. 13 from 3-5 p.m. Susan requested the gals bring nothing other than themselves to celebrate an early Valentine’s Day and that we did. There was champagne and mimosas and a feast of roast beef and bread, fruit, chips and dips, nuts, candy, and nummy cakes. Susan lives in Unit 58 and is a welcome addition to our Unit 53 happy hours, gal’s luncheons, and get-togethers. Her sister Linda lives in Unit 53. Susan is always ready to open up her lovely home to entertain.

From February 2019, seated at our table were ten new homeowners: Debi Strada, Jackie Manzek, Charlotte Ischi, Debra White, Sherry Trefz, Sally Mills, Cindy Berchem, Patty Vitale, Mary Jane Broom, and Julie Douglas.

Unit 54 Valentine’s Luncheon

Barbara Dunson

Fourteen ladies (a perfect Valentine’s number) decked in Valentine’s red enjoyed lunch at Zeta’s Grill in Avondale on Feb. 12. FYI: Zeta’s puts on a great lunch!

Unit 54 Shows Generosity and Gratitude to Local Service Members

Barbara Dunson

Recently, HOA staff member Trudy Shaffer began an effort to send care packages to servicemen and women overseas. Her husband is currently deployed overseas for a lengthy assignment and has reported to her the many things they are lacking. So, when Trudy asked Bob Parks, Vice President of PCHOA to send an email out explaining the opportunity to provide some everyday conveniences to locally active military members serving overseas, I sent a notice to my fellow residents in Unit 54. I let them know that I would leave a box at my home where donations could be dropped off at any time without the need to notify me.

In the first week, we received generous donations of snack bars, energy mix, nuts, trail mix, and granola bars. Week two donations of toothpaste, dental floss, eye drops, powdered drink packets, toilet paper, nuts, and tuna in foil packets were dropped off. All of these donors gave out of the kindness of their hearts, seeking no recognition. Kudos to them and the others in the community for all they are doing! And to Trudy, for the numerous weekly shipments, the word back from overseas is a huge thank you! Way to go Unit 54!

Unit 62B Mardi Gras Monday

Lin Ochs

What to do on Mardi Gras Monday, the day before Fat Tuesday? Why, have a 62Bourbon Street party! That was the notion of The Krewe of the Happy People, who hosted a spectacular progressive festivity on Virginia Avenue. One-hundred-nineteen 62B residents attended, with each household providing an appetizer, dessert, or beverage. While residents strolled from house to house sampling the delicious culinary and libationary offerings, resident Dan Krause entertained them with live New Orleans music, while Gary Kotula sketched merrymaker caricatures. Grand Marshall Steve Harper and wife Karen, along with King and Queen Rick Blatnik and Dave Johnson, presided over the shenanigans. A traditional Mardi Gras parade and bead-throwing activity very well served the intended purpose of riling up the revelers. It was an unforgettable Mardi Gras experience. Accolades to the Krewe (Nancy Moore, Jill and John Derkits, Laura and Jerry Variola, Cindy and Zak Zaklan, Linda and Fred Mazzella, Judy and Roger Crystal, Dave Johnson, and Lin Ochs) for an incredible job planning, organizing, and hosting this delightful event. Thanks to all participating 62B residents for a great afternoon.
