Unit Happenings

Unit 3 residents at the pool.

Unit 3 pool party

Unit 3 had an old-fashioned pool party and picnic on Tuesday evening, September 25 at the Oasis pool. It was a fun, casual event seeing old friends and making new ones. A great time was had by all.

Carole Rausch summed up the evening poetically:

We Did It Again!

By Carole Rausch

Unit 3 has been partying once again,

Grilling, snacking, playing games, and just chilling.

PC’s Oasis pool was a perfect setting

For all the neighbors who were so ready and willing.

We had fun, shared stories, and sang happy birthdays,

To all our September born friends.

We gobbled up cupcakes, won prizes, snapped photos

And partied hearty till the evening’s end.

Unit 11 happy hour

Unit 11 enjoyed a neighborhood happy hour on the patio at Eagle’s Nest. It was a general consensus that we do this get together again soon!

Unit 20 ladies luncheon

Carolyn Rota

On October 3 the ladies of Unit 20 had their monthly luncheon in Verrado at the Ciao Grazia restaurant. It was hosted by Joy Reilly and her mom Jo. Everyone had a wonderful time and the food was delicious. A big thank you to Joy and Jo for the lovely gifts. Remember to check your email for information about Unit 20’s November luncheon.

Unit 51 luncheon in Scottsdale

Janet Miazga

Twenty of Unit 51’s lovely ladies enjoyed a special luncheon at Tommy Bahama’s Restaurant in Kierland Commons, Scottsdale, on October 11. Hosts Sandra Adams and Jennifer Yelvington provided the perfect opportunity to combine shopping with visiting friends over lunch and Bevy Hogan did a professional job with table decor in the private dining room. Many gals were just returning from their summer away and were excited to see their neighbors again. All present had only good things to say about this fall luncheon, including comments such as “fabulous,” “wonderful,” “fantastic,” “happiest ever” as well as “great photo, great lunch, great unit!”

Ladies who do lunch

Unit 52 ladies luncheon

Liz Gibson

Twenty ladies who do lunch enjoyed a perfect weather-wise afternoon at the Verrado Grille in The Verrado Golf Club on Wednesday, October 10. The food was wonderful, the service excellent and we were particularly pleased that three of our new residents were able to join us.

Our aptly named party unit is looking forward to two upcoming events.

There is a Meet and Greet party in the common area between Monte Vista Dr and Alvarado Dr; a casual BYOB with appetizers on Sunday, October 21. Then we reprise the popular Trivia Party on Sunday, November 2 in the Chianti Room at Tuscany Falls. The Welcome Back Trivia Party will have a buffet dinner and tables competing for the “not so fabulous prizes.” It was a real blast last year and is sure to be an evening of fun with Melissa Kallett hosting once more.

Unit 53 happy hour

Sandy Stephens

Jon and Susan Jackson hosted our September Happy Hour at their spacious and inviting home. As usual everyone brought a dish to share and whatever they wanted to drink. Monthly happy hours bring neighbor friends together that are otherwise involved in their own activities and create a cohesive social unit.

Unit 53 wine and cheese party

Sandy Stephens

Carol Sanders invited the Unit 53 gals over to her tastefully decorated Southwest themed home for a wine and cheese get-together September 26. Instead of cheese, however, she had a spread of gourmet hors d’oeuvres she had made. Judging by all the happy faces, everyone had a good time catching up with each other.

Unit 58 men’s breakfast group

On October 12, the Unit 58 Men’s Breakfast group reconvened. Our numbers were somewhat diminished this time, probably because some us haven’t returned from vacations and others still enjoying the cooler temperatures of their summer homes. In any case, no one suffered from a diminished appetite, enjoying the delicious cuisine of the Eagle’s Nest dining room.

In a slightly different twist, this month our member, Bill Mooberry, suggested a charitable endeavor that the group chose as an ongoing project. A fellow PC resident, Cindy Linthicum, made us aware of a serious need of clothing for certain patients at Banner Thunderbird Hospital.

The hospital is helping to clothe the homeless. Their detox inpatient department has a donation closet for male and female patients. Many are homeless and come in with only the clothing on their backs. The hospital staff offers them a gently-used outfit and are always in need of undergarments, socks, pants and tops for both men and women. That outfit becomes theirs to keep. These patients are truly grateful for something that most of us take for granted.

Our members are asked, if they or their spouse have men’s or women’s clothing that they no longer wear, that they bring them to our next breakfast meeting. We then pass what is collected on to Cindy. We hope that the PebbleCreek community at large will become aware of this important need as well.

Unit 58 celebrates the beginning of the end of summer

Ed Raker

September 20 was the date of the latest monthly Unit 58 Happy Hour and residents returned to the practice of gathering for beverages, snacks and socializing together. This time it was at the home of Ed Raker and Lynn Jacobson, at 16467 West Almeria Road.

An estimated 35 to 40 happy residents enjoyed the fact that temperatures are finally moderating and the patio weather became livable as the evening progressed. And, as always, each guest or couple brought delicious hors d’oeuvres, salads or sweet treats. An additional bit of entertainment was being able to watch a rare event, as the Cleveland Browns beat the New York Jets on Thursday night football.

Next month the event will repeat at a different residence, soon to be announced.

Unit 58 brunch at Eagle’s Nest

Enjoying brunch at Eagle’s Nest Restaurant, fourteen ladies from unit 58 met on Friday, October 12 to enjoy good food and lively conversation.

Unit 61 Fall Fling luncheon

The residents of Unit 61 gathered for a delicious luncheon in the Chianti Room on Saturday September 29, organized by the Unit’s Social Committee. This is an annual event and has grown each year as we add new residents to the Unit. Our neighbors had fun catching up with each other, welcoming new residents and sharing stories of our summer vacations. The luncheon ended with a prize raffle. Some Unit 61 activities include a collection of food stuffs for St. Mary’s Food Bank. Our attendees donated several boxes of food which were then delivered to the food bank by Barb Geiges. We are already looking ahead to next year’s luncheon.

Unit 62A happenings

Barb Downey

September was packed with fun filled activities for the 62A Sheridan Team! We had three new, wonderfully successful, off-site events to expand our horizons. The Stir-Crazy Comedy Club, at Westgate, featured three comedians, headlining Jen Kober, in a small, intimate setting, with a good dinner menu and lots of laughter from our residents. The following week we attended Ballet Under the Stars by the Estrella Park lake. This was a great venue to enjoy the talented Phoenix Ballet in the cool, starlit evening in a picturesque lakefront setting. The third new event was the Phoenix Symphony, featuring “Sinatra and Friends” and dinner at The Strand, in Phoenix. A jazz band within the symphony added an unexpected twist as we listened to “crooners of the era,” including Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Tony Bennett.

The ladies only events included several hand and foot afternoons plus a great lunch outing at BJ’s in Glendale. We now have 11 ladies in the process of attending Mah Jongg classes, plus several who already know how to play, so we anticipate this as a regular calendar event soon! We joined the men in a rousing game of Mexican Train, which continues to challenge us as we learn the offensive and defensive strategies of this fun game! The men also had a wonderful turnout and enjoyed great food at their monthly breakfast at Mimi’s Café in Goodyear.

Our pool party for the month of September was held at the Oasis pool where this month’s theme was “Mexican Pile-On!” The “pile-on” thankfully referred to the meal, which we all enjoyed immensely! We each brought ingredients for a taco type salad and piled them high on Doritos chips as we created our own delicious Mexican inspired plate. A very fun and scrumptious evening!

Our unit has decided that we will have a monthly organized opportunity to volunteer in our community and to give back of our time and talents. For the second time we helped at St. Mary’s Food Bank in Surprise and worked behind the scenes to package food items for those in need. We enjoyed our time together, working hard for those who need us!

Our monthly Happy Hour was held at the beautiful home of Tom and Jackie MacKenzie, where we had almost 40 neighbors attending and bringing an appetizer or dessert to share. The food and fellowship were fabulous as always!

Finishing the month was our second neighborhood Game Night featuring Catch Phrase at the home of John and Jody McCrickard and Apples to Apples at the home of Mike and Patti Trapp. Fun competition and much laughter were the results of this great evening, as we rotated time in each home playing these games.
