Unit 27A explores Phoenix places

Camille Grabb

Although gatherings for neighborly lunches and good conversation are always a great event, Unit 27A gathered at two spectacular places to break bread and explore two valley gems.

On January 19 the Unit neighbors carpooled over to the landmark Wrigley Mansion for a tour followed by a delicious lunch overlooking the beautifully manicured grounds (above the Biltmore Hotel, which the Wrigleys owned at one time as well). This impressive Spanish Revival Mansion was commissioned in 1929 by William Wrigley, Jr. as a winter cottage gift for his beloved wife, Ada. The attention to detail in the 16,000 square foot home (which was the smallest of their five homes around the country), includes a vestibule room that formerly housed the telephone communication system and is covered in “silver chewing gum wrapper” wallpaper! In 1992 the mansion was purchased by Geordie Hormel (of the food-giant family) and restored to its former grandeur and is now open to the public for tours, food and drinks and social events. The mansion is one of the Phoenix “Points of Pride.”

Continuing to explore the area, on February 8 neighbors carpooled over to the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) for a docent-guided tour of the museum that opened in April 2010. This unique treasure in the desert is the vision of Robert J Ulrich, former CEO of the Target Corporation. The beautiful 200,000 square foot building houses its collection of 16,000 valuable instruments displaying 6,500 at any one time to the public. The valuable collection ranges from simple to elaborate, historic to state-of-the-art instruments from over 200 countries around the world. In addition to the galleries, the museum houses a 300-seat theater that welcomes a wide-range of musical talents in concert. The on-site award-winning Café Allegro offers delicious food made from scratch using local ingredients. Whether you enjoy music by playing an impressive instrument or simply turning on the radio, exploring the MIM will bring music to your ears!

Unit 51 Ladies Luncheon

Carol Adkins

Arizona spring was in the air; chocolate candy hearts and kisses decorated the tables, and 22 Unit 51 ladies took full advantage of the nice weather to meet for the February luncheon at Tempo Urban Bistro. Thanks to our hostess Linda Campbell for arranging the event and providing the chocolate candy desserts! Our next luncheon will be Thursday, March 9.

Unit 52

Liz Gibson

Hosted by Hilary Fiscus, the popular Verrado Golf Club was the setting for the Unit 52 ladies’ luncheon on Wednesday, February 8.

The first of four unit parties for the year will be a catered Street Party on Sunday, March 26; always a fun happening.

Unit 61

Kathy Gorchesky

Unit 61 has jumped into the fun and laughs of Pub Nite Trivia. A total of four tables are representing Unit 61. Crazy Eights, Forgetful Eight, Cypress 61 Solutions and Quizzards of OZ are the names of the teams. Unit 61 also has a couple on the Behind the 8 Ball team. Many laughs are heard on these fast paced, fun nights. These neighbors are keeping busy with Putters Club and sharing new things such as beading, Chinese mahjongg, Bunco groups, men’s lunches and ladies’ lunches. Group events planned are an Epic Escape Game and a block party in April—continuing the fun in Unit 61.
