To all PebbleCreek residents: eGroup alternative

Diana Cox

There is now an alternative to the existing egroups ([email protected] and [email protected]), which are email lists using antiquated technology from the 1990s that Yahoo is no longer supporting. A member of the PebbleCreek community (Diana Cox) has created a free community message board as a community service using modern and user-friendly software (domain and software purchased at her expense and is not for profit), which has many more features which allow a more functional community communications experience.

The message board is primarily web based, so you can choose to receive no emails, or only specific email notifications on topics about which you are interested; all of these features are controllable by the user. Because of this, there are topic-specific forums for open discussions among residents, which you can choose to participate in or not. There is an ignore feature available, which allows people to block posts of people they don’t care to interact with. Recommendations for services will remain posted in a categorized, easily findable format, so far fewer of the repetitive requests for recommendations will need to be made since the information is posted. Residents can quickly post wash status, gate closures, etc. and then they can be deleted when no longer relevant. You can filter/format how you view the message board, whether by category or by viewing recent posts, including filtering out posts you’ve already read. Since everyone must use their real name as their username, posts don’t need to be signed. You can post a picture of yourself as your profile picture, so people can get to know each other by face as well. Because of these features, very little moderation is needed.

To join the message board, click on “register” on this page at the top right and fill out the registration form: https://pcornotpc.club/community/index.php. Use your real first and last name as your username, as you would introduce yourself or your registration will be denied and you will have to redo it. One person per account please, as each person will be interacting with their neighbors as themselves. Select “stay logged in” to avoid having to remember your account name and password.

Although the functions of the message board are quite user-friendly, Diana Cox is teaching a seminar on January 17, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. in the Eagle’s Nest Ballroom, to walk people through the basic “How To” of using the message board. The room holds 200 people and at least 200 people have already expressed interest in attending, so please come a little early to assure finding a seat. (If there are too many people, a second seminar can be arranged.) For the best experience, please bring your smartphone and/or laptop, and have already registered for the site, so you can follow along on your device as the demonstration is presented.
