Marge Ellison, Vice President
The Pet Companions Club of PebbleCreek is pleased to have as speaker at our December 5 General Meeting, Sandi Baxter, co-owner of the Desert Mirage Alpaca Ranch in Wittman, Arizona. All PebbleCreek residents, whether club members or not, are invited to attend this very unique free presentation. We will meet at 3:00 p.m. in Room 100 of the Eagle’s Nest Activities Center.
Sandi and her husband, Chuck, started their business in Marana, Arizona in 2006 with only four alpacas. They now have a herd of twenty-seven nationally registered alpacas who participate in alpaca shows and competitions. Alpacas are indigenous to South America, primarily Peru, Chili and Bolivia. The primary purpose of breeding alpacas is the production of high-quality fiber that is extremely soft and hypoallergenic.
Did you know alpaca fiber is five times stronger and three times warmer than wool and has water repellent properties? They produce five to ten pounds of fleece per year from which such products as mittens, hats and scarves can be made. Their fleece comes in twenty-two different colors! Alpacas are much smaller than llamas and generally weigh between one hundred and two hundred pounds. They are docile and quiet and connect well with people and most other animals.
Please join us Wednesday, December 5 to learn more about these unique and fascinating little-known animals.
