Lena Godebu and David Rossi

The PebbleCreek Niners have a tradition of putting a dollar into a pot to award the player whose drive lands closest to the pin on the par three holes. When my foursome approached our first par three, one of our four, Dave Rossi told us how important it was for him to win closest-to. He said, “I need to win this. I didn’t have a dollar for the pot and a sweet young lady, Lena Gadebu, at the clubhouse gave me a dollar. I told her if I won I would split my winnings with her.”

The three of us told him to go first and to just do it.

Dave drove the ball, but it veered off to the left of the green. Then it hit a small hill and bounced right, rolled down the hill and stopped within two feet of the hole! The three of us cheered. We all made sure when we drove our balls, they were nowhere near the green for fear of knocking Dave’s ball away from the hole. (That was our excuse anyway.) Dave’s drive was still the closest after the rest of the field played through and he won the $19.

He went to the clubhouse and proudly presented Lena with half the winnings.

They both went home a little richer—and with a couple of extra dollars.
