So, you love to play tennis. Would you teach yourself to play left-handed if you injured your right hand? Well, that is what Jo Werner did when faced with a wrist injury that threatened her playing tennis again. That’s love of the game.
Jo was introduced to tennis by her dad while in her mid-twenties. She’s played since then on various teams, regardless of where she has lived. Jo has played tennis at the Boeing Tennis Club while living in the Seattle area, played with the Arizona Tennis Association, and has been a member of PebbleCreek’s Stingers and Roadrunners tennis teams. She has been on the Roadrunners for the past ten years and is currently the team captain, which she describes as a group of ladies that play hard, but have fun and are always fair and complimentary to their opponents. She has also served on the PebbleCreek Tennis Club board.
Jo and her husband Nick have been married for 34 years and have 16 grandchildren that live in Seattle, Anchorage, and Nashville. Her friend and neighbor in Seattle, Virginia Robinson, introduced Jo and Nick to PebbleCreek. They fell in love with all that PebbleCreek had to offer and decided to move here 15 years ago. Still working at the time, Jo played with the nighttime group, TNT (Tuesday Night Tennis), where she met new friends and her PebbleCreek tennis experience took off from there.
Though tennis is an “absolute love” of Jo’s, it is not her only interest. She volunteers one day per week to work at the Corte Sierra Elementary School and also volunteers her time at the Southwest Lending Closet. In addition to her volunteer work, Jo plays golf once or twice a week and leads a book club. If the above activities weren’t enough to fill her days, Jo is an avid moviegoer and was able to see 112 movies in 2018.
There is no doubt that Jo Werner loves the game of tennis, but in addition to playing tennis, she has been able to get involved in PebbleCreek and give back to the community as well. We salute Jo for her love of tennis, her love of PebbleCreek, and her community service and for that, she is our Tennis Player of the Month.
