We call him by many names: Big Cheese, Prez, Grand Poobah, Supreme Highness, Hey You, Chief, Honey, King of Tennis, Dad and mostly friend. Jerry Santy is the hardest working and playing 82 year old that I know.
I interviewed Jerry to capture his words of wisdom before he steps down from his duties as PebbleCreek Tennis Club president in December. Here are the highlights from my interview with him. Jerry has been a resident of PebbleCreek for four and a half years. Jerry didn’t play tennis in high school or college and decided to start about 30 years ago. He wanted to volunteer with the PebbleCreek Tennis Club because he feels all members should take a turn on the board. His term is up December 2016. When asked about the accomplishments during his term, he told me he is very happy about the addition of three new courts, the website, the new court reservation system and doubling the number of tournaments/socials per year. His advice to any new board member is to keep in mind to always do what’s best for the members. Be fair, be honest, be loyal.
Jerry’s funniest memory on the tennis court was in Montana. “I took off my warm-ups only to realize I forgot to wear tennis shorts!” He loves to play on a team or with the Amigos. His best strategy on the courts is to call your opponent’s shot “out,” not to worry about your mental game and to warm up with Bud Light. Jerry likes his Prince Tennis Racquet. He admires Jimmy Connors for attitude and spunk and Steffi and Martina for their personality and sense of humor. Jerry thinks life in PebbleCreek is ideal and through tennis has met many wonderful new friends. Jerry really enjoys meeting old and new members at the mixers and especially the social time afterward.
