There was a large, audible gasp of surprise (followed by thunderous applause) when Andy Friedenberg, Director of the PebbleCreek Cinema Society, said, “Ladies and gentlemen, here’s the star of the documentary, Tab Hunter.” We’d just finished watching Tab Hunter Confidential, a revealing look into 1950s-era Hollywood — and beyond — and one of its biggest screen idols. And here he was, live, in person and more handsome than ever.
The documentary, based on Hunter’s 2005 memoir Tab Hunter: The Making of a Movie Star, is a wonderfully-crafted biography of the likable actor, now 84 years old and includes a number of on-camera recollections in which he freely admits he was not the greatest talent, talks with great candor about some personal tragedies, speaks openly about some of his former relationships — and makes it clear he’s much happier these days, out of the limelight and spending time with his beloved horses.
Allan Glaser, who produced the documentary, was also on hand to talk about making the film and answer audience questions. Glaser began his career as a producer at 20th Century Fox and it was there he met Tab Hunter. They “clicked” and the two partnered up to form Glaser/Hunter Productions. They have produced a variety of projects including the feature films Lust in the Dust and Dark Horse and several television series.
Hunter and his partner, Glaser, have been touring the country, promoting their new film and the PebbleCreek Cinema Society was delighted to have them here. And if you missed seeing Tab this morning you may have another chance – – following the screening the Hunter and Glaser duo asked for a tour of our model homes!
