Special Speaker in November

Teri Sellers

PebbleCreek Alzheimer’s Support Group is open to all residents who have a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia. We meet twice a month, a breakfast social and a support group meeting. Our goal is to provide support and information to families that are caring for a loved one with dementia.

It seems that one of the questions that I am asked most frequently is about finding a good doctor and how to make the most out of a doctor visit.

In recognition of November being National Hospice and Palliative Month, we are honored to have Dr. Uzma Jafri join us to provide an overview of being a geriatric specialist and a hospice and palliative physician. She will also open the conversation for your questions.

Uzma Jafri, MD, CMD, has lived in the West Valley for 16 years. She is triple board certified in Family, Geriatric, and Obesity Medicine. Since 2011, she has run a solo black bag private practice for seniors 65 and older in long-term care. As adjunct faculty at Banner University Geriatric Fellowship, she teaches and trains future geriatricians. Dr. Jafri is also a medical director at an assisted living and in hospice for almost a decade, overseeing infection, patient care, safety and quality control. She’s currently president of the Arizona Muslim Senior Services, a nonprofit she helped launch, and founded her new telehealth practice for “the younguns” in Arizona this new year. Her full time job is her mothering her children, playing soccer and Girl Scout cookie mom. For fun she podcasts, writes, and volunteers.

On Nov. 4 the Creekers will hold our Annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Sunrise Park. For the past several years our PebbleCreek team has raised enough money to be Champion Status—something we are very proud of and hope to continue!

Registration starts at 8 a.m., with the Walk starting at 9 a.m. The Walk is free, but we will be more than happy to accept your donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.

In addition, we will have several lovely gift baskets to be auctioned. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. All proceeds will go to the Alzheimer’s Association.

For more information on the Walk, please contact Teri Sellers at 602-793-0299.

Saturday breakfast meetings are the first Saturday of the month. RSVP is mandatory.

Support group meetings are held on the third Saturday and do not require a RSVP.

If you are not a member of our group, it is easy to join.

You are not alone. I want to share helpful resources and information with you and add you to our email list. Our support group is an excellent way to learn more about the journey that is dementia and a wonderful way to meet others who are going through the same journey as you. Your information is always safe and confidential. The benefits are priceless.
