Special Alzheimer’s Events

Teri Sellers

The PebbleCreek Alzheimer’s Support Group is available to all residents who have a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia. The group meets twice a month for a breakfast social and a support group meeting.

As a support group, our main goal is to provide a safe and confidential place for caregivers to learn more about the disease process, learn coping skills (this disease is more challenging for the caregiver than the patient!), and connect with others who are on the same journey. We meet twice monthly at events, plus I send out informational emails and share other educational opportunities outside of PebbleCreek. Our support group meeting generally features an educational presentation on a topic relevant to the needs of the group. We have been fortunate to have many professional speakers talk on subjects ranging from financial and legal issues to how to make your home safer for your loved one. Several doctors have even given their time to our group.

The Alzheimer’s Association supports us by providing informational brochures and handouts that are available to our members for free. They are an excellent resource for us on research, brain health, and care options. For more information, you can find them online at www.alz.org.

The Alzheimer’s Association is a non-profit organization, and each year, our support group helps. This year we are planning three fundraising events.

* September 29 we are hosting Pam Ostrowski, author of It’s Not That Simple, Helping Families Navigate the Alzheimer’s Journey. This will be a presentation and book signing. Tickets are $5 in advance and $10 at the door. This event will be held at the Chianti Room at 4 p.m.; a cash bar will be open.

* October 16 is The Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Sunrise Park at 9 a.m. We will be walking to raise awareness and funds. Can’t walk? Come cheer us on! The walk is free. Donations are gladly accepted.

* October 27 is QuarterMania. This super fun event is a combination of Bingo and an auction, where you can win great prizes for as little as a quarter! Admission tickets are $25, and you should bring lots of quarters, as we will have more than 30 prizes to bid on. This event will be held at the Chianti Room; a cash bar will be open.

The proceeds from all these events go to The Alzheimer’s Association for our PebbleCreek Alzheimer’s Support Group Walk Team, The Creekers! Last year we earned Elite Grand Champion status!
