What is the PebbleCreek Ballroom Dance Club?

Nancy Herrem

Let me tell you a personal story.

My husband rarely danced until a couple in PebbleCreek offered free basic ballroom dance classes. He had the usual reservations about dance classes but, for me, he agreed to go. After the second or third class he realized a few things. The other men in the class felt the same as he did but discovered he/they weren’t that bad and he was actually starting to enjoy the classes.

After finishing the classes, we felt we might be ready for PebbleCreek’s Dance Club. At that time it was donated cd’s, a cd player and table and chairs we set up ourselves in the Eagle’s Nest Ballroom. That was back in 2000; we are still attending PCBDC dances and more often than not it is my husband who wants to know when the next dance is scheduled.

The PebbleCreek Ballroom Dance Club was formed in 1999. Since then the club has grown from 20 some members to a membership of 168 and instead of donated cd’s, the club now hires DJs or provides live music. Some of those who attend are good ballroom dancers, some are normal everyday dancers and some are like we were back in 2000—just learning. What we have in common is we all love to dance and that is all that matters.

The PCBDC’s membership is $15 per person. If purchased in January your January dance ticket is free (see January’s PebbleCreek Post for details). For the remainder of the year, a member’s casual dance ticket costs a minimum of $5 less than a non-member’s and a minimum of $10 less for a dinner dance. The club sponsors eight dances during the year; five casual dances and three dinner dances. Attendance is limited to 200 so there is always room on the dance floor.

Just like in 2000, there is a couple that offer free weekly basic ballroom dance classes (Fox Trot, Swing, Waltz, Cha Cha, Rhumba, etc.) on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Eagle’s Nest Ballroom. You do not need to be a member to attend. When you decide you are ready for more advanced steps, the club can refer you to a resident who is a professional ballroom dance instructor. Please contact President Nancy Herrem at 623-536-8076, Vice President Tom Healy at 623-388-4915 or Immediate Past-President Ed Sampson at 623-536-7142 with any questions.

I hope I’ve tweaked your interest enough that you’ll give the club a try; attend a dance or two or even take advantage of the free dance classes offered. I’m sure you’ll keep coming back and we’ll see you on the dance floor.
