Singles Club Goes Back to School

On Nov. 9, 21 singles club members went back to Putnam Valley Middle School to enjoy “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” play produced by the TheaterWorks of Peoria.

The cast members portrayed junior high students participating in the annual spelling bee. One of the plays many highlights came when three random members in the audience were called up on the stage to become part of the students participating in the spelling bee. Of course, they were all to be given simple words compared to the cast members who naturally then complained. As the spelling went on the audience members were given tougher words so that they would eventually be eliminated except the third audience member surprisingly spelled his tough word correctly. The entire cast yelled “no, you were just supposed to get it wrong.” The moderator then gave him an impossible word to spell, when asked to use it in a sentence and the entire cast said “no, just get it wrong.” He then asked its definition and again the entire cast all yelled “no, just get it wrong,” which finally he did. The entire cast joyfully went wild dancing and sang him off the stage.

The final two students fought back and forth spelling words until one prevailed and won the spelling bee. The first-place prize was a $200 U.S. Saving Bond. The singles really enjoyed the play with all its inside jokes, wonderful dancing, and fantastic singing. It was fun to go back to school.
