On April 19, the PebbleCreek Men’s Golf Association (PCMGA) provided a Skills Challenge as a Member-Guest pre-tournament activity. The skills event consisted of two separate challenges: a 9-hole putting contest and a chipping contest. The winner was determined by the team’s combined score. Lowest score won. All 106 two-man teams participated.
For the putting contest, both putting greens at Tuscany Falls were used. Teams in Flights A, B, and C competed on the upper putting green and teams in Flights D, E, and F competed on the lower putting green. The member and his guest alternated putts on each of the nine holes. One player putted first on all the even-numbered holes and the other on all the odd-numbered holes. Obstacles included “boulders” (aka 10” rocks), “sand traps” (aka 24” ring of sand) and a “water hazard” (aka a sheet of blue plastic). The team score was the total number of putts.
The chipping contest took place on both practice chipping greens. Teams in Flights A, B, and C competed on the east end chipping green and teams in Flights D, E, and F competed on the west end chipping green. Each player hit one chip shot to a circular target zone with the hole at the center. The best score was zero points for an ace. Each progressive outer circle represented an additional point up to 10 points for totally missing the target zone. Team score was the combined number of points.
With a combined score of 23, the winners of this year’s PCMGA Member-Guest Skills Challenge were Sherman Leach and his son, Robert (aka BJ). They putted well, taking 20 putts for the tough nine holes. But they really shined in the chipping contest. BJ scored 3 points, but his dad, Sherman, hit the jackpot with an ace! Congrats!
The PCMGA would like to thank the volunteers involved in the Skills Challenge. They include Rene Lefebvre and Ken Hahn for setting up the putting green courses and Jeannie Place, Pam Schunke, Mary Pinski, Jackie Nigh, Barb McKinney, Chrissy Bridges, Janice VanHorn, and Barb Jerzyk for managing the chipping contest. They also want to thank Joe Miller and Ronnie Decker for setting up the chipping green target zones. Thanks again!
