On November 14 the Rovin’ Pebbles RV Club made their way to the White Tank Mountain Regional Park Campground for a four-day Rally in the desert, northwest of Goodyear.
We started with a fabulous potluck dinner on Tuesday evening and on Wednesday had a grand tour of the Goodyear Airport. Ever wonder why those large commercial/cargo aircraft are parked just east of the Goodyear Ball Park? They are beyond their flying days and are being torn down for usable parts and scrap. It is a very lucrative business for the companies involved. One aircraft can be completely scrapped in 7 to 10 days.
Our tour included stops at the terminal, a personal van tour of the airport grounds where we saw Lady Bird Johnson’s private aircraft which has been parked there for 30 years. In addition we saw a large hanger built during World War II. At the time it was the highest structure in Phoenix. We also toured the Flight Simulator at Lufthansa Training Center and Suzy Burwick and Barry Taschner sat in the pilot seat and attempted a landing at the airport.
From the airport we went to Saddle Mountain Brewery/Restaurant where we had a personal tour of the Brewery by Niel, their BrewMaster. This was followed by a great lunch and a few of their best beers.
On Thursday morning we did an Interpretive Walk at the Waterfall Trailhead narrated by one of the Park Rangers. Thursday afternoon we had a Super Happy Hour with lots of goodies and a Washer Toss competition won by the team of Kathryn Sarter and Linda Bolon. This was followed by S’mores on the campfire and a special visit to our campsite by a curious gray fox.
Friday was our Yoyo Day (You’re On Your Own), which is a day to relax or see some attractions in the area. Saturday was our departure day. All in all we had a great time only 15 miles from home.
