Roger Borlaug: November Woodcarver of the Month

Larry Matney

Roger Borlaug is the PebbleCreek Woodcarvers Club woodcarver of the month for November 2020. This photo shows Roger with several of his carvings on the lower shelf of the display window in the Creative Arts Center. The top shelf shows the Ark created by club members as a raffle prize in 2021. Roger carved two black bears and an ostrich for the Ark.

Roger has lived in PebbleCreek since 2010 and joined the club shortly after moving in. He had no carving experience before joining the club but quickly developed a love for carving through the help of other carvers. He especially wants to thank Gordon Anderson, Jeannette McElroy, Jim Taylor, and Robert Johnson.

Roger’s favorite subjects are chip carving, animals, and Northwest Indian themed subjects. He has been teaching carving classes for about two years. He has taught classes on carving a white-tailed kite, a western tanager, a hummingbird with a flower mount, and chip carving.

The carver of the month award is unique within the carving club because the award recipient is decided on by the last two individuals to receive the award. It was started in October 2019 and is a way for carvers to recognize other carvers who have been influential in developing a love for carving in others.
