Residents join March for Our Lives

Student led and inspired, an estimated crowd of 15,000 participated in the March for Our Lives in Phoenix on Saturday, March 24. A solid square mile of walkers of all ages—brave and strong—joined the energy to never again see gun violence in our schools.

Some of the student organizers spoke to the crowd from a stage near the capitol building. Samantha Lekberg, a 16-year-old Surprise student, told the story that at age 10 she came home from school and heard about the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. She could not believe that kids younger than she were killed in the mass shooting. When Samantha heard about the Parkland shooting, she was determined to join the voice of those brave Florida teens.

Residents Phyllis Karp, KT Tanner, Lori Freiberg and Marsha Schneider were among those reaching out and speaking up for school safety where a student can succeed rather than attend school afraid of what might be lurking around the corner. We march for all students, school personnel, our children and our grandchildren.
