PebbleCreek Republican Club President Moore with Congressmen Jim Jordan and Paul Gosar
Patricia Moore
In late May I and another member of the Republican Club had the honor of visiting our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. Thanks to our Congressman Paul Gosar and his staff, we were given an incredible tour of the Capitol building from basement offices to every level, corridor, and room open to the public. The tour started with a 13-minute orientation film that introduced us to the Capitol and gave a history of how our government was established. We then entered the Exhibition Hall, which is 16,500 square feet. It is dedicated to telling the story of Congress and the U.S. Capitol. Throughout the Capitol there were historical paintings from between 1817-1880 and Relief Sculptures depicting early exploration. The Rotunda, with its impressive cast iron dome reaching 48 feet above the floor, primarily houses statues and busts of American presidents but also of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Susan B. Anthony, to name a few. Many important events are held here as well. We happened to see several senators walk by who greeted us! The National Statuary Hall houses statues donated by each state to honor notable persons in their history. Barry Goldwater’s statue represented Arizona. The Hall of Columns houses numerous other statues and connects the corridors of the House and Senate wings.
That evening Congressman Gosar graciously hosted us for dinner at the Capital Club where we met several congressmen. Among them were Jim Jordan of Ohio and Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey.
The next day featured a tour of the Museum of the Bible that was inspiring, educational, and thought provoking with its interactive videos, multiple floors of displays, and rooms to explore featuring the Old Testament and the Nazareth Experience. Later in the afternoon we visited The Library of Congress established in 1800 by John Adams. In 1815 Congress paid Thomas Jefferson $23,950 for his entire collection of over 6,487 books to lay the foundation for what has become the world’s largest library with more than 175 million items. Its numerous rooms with historical displays of all types offer visitors a glimpse inside one of Washington’s most beautiful spaces, too amazing to describe in words.
The highlight of the trip was a tour of the White House’s East Wing and the Residence and a view of the Kennedy Garden. As a special treat we were approved to view the landing and lift off of the VH-92A Patriot, the new Marine One Helicopter from the South Lawn as President Trump left the White House and waved to the crowd. What a spectacular opportunity and the culmination of a once–in–a–lifetime experience that we will cherish forever. This visit to “The Shining City Upon a Hill” gave us a renewed connection to our country, to its founding principles, and a reminder of why America remains the beacon of hope for the world.
