On May 1, the PebbleCreek Republican Club first welcomed Goodyear Councilman Brannon Hampton, who explained the upcoming Special Election and how each of the six proposals affect the City Charter. He stated that these amendments primarily clarify administrative responsibilities. Answering questions were Mayor Joe Pizzillo, Vice Mayor Wally Campbell, and council members Laura Kaino, Benita Beckles, and Trey Terry.
Arizona State Senate Majority leader Janae Schamp enlightened us about her work in the Senate and the bills she is trying to have passed. These include protecting families “from the front door to the border,” encouraging the American Dream, and making reforms to the Department of Child Safety. Other areas of her concerted efforts include election integrity, medical freedom, agricultural industry support, water, parental authority via school choice, and ensuring the protection of our constitutional rights.
Our last speaker was former State Representative Justin Heap, recently elected to the post of Maricopa County Recorder. His goal is to clean up the voter rolls and return confidence to Arizona elections. Recorders typically record documents, maintain the voter rolls, oversee voter registration, and handle mail–in ballot preparation and early voting.
He plans to cross train people in his employ to better serve the voting process needs, including job descriptions and follow through clarifications. Justin also intends to double check addresses for mail-in ballots to make sure they are not commercial properties and to eliminate personal data from the outside of the ballot. He wants to eliminate party affiliation when signatures are being verified on the computer screens in order to allow for observer impartiality during the signature verification process. Currently the Recorder has no access to voter registration or the DMV to verify driver’s licenses for proof of citizenship so he is investigating other ways to accomplish this important task.
