Q. I have been told for years that my grip is the underlying cause of my inconsistent game but when I try to change, I just can’t hit the ball properly. Any suggestions?

A. Changing the position of your hands is one of the hardest things to do but you will get over the uncomfortable feeling fairly quickly if you stick with it and do not change back. Hit balls teed up on the range with small, half swings and get used to hitting solid shots half your normal distance. As your confidence increases, increase the swing length and speed until you are back to normal. Look at the pros on television and you will see some variety in hand position but not nearly as much as you would see on the first tee at PebbleCreek.:)

Q. I am having trouble with my alignment and although I keep checking it, my friends say I am still aimed right of the target. How do I break this habit?

A. As usual, the first response is to go to the range and hit some balls after laying a club or alignment rods on the ground parallel to your intended target line. Then make sure your feet are parallel to it so you know that you are aligned properly. As you hit shots, your mind will become accustomed to the different feeling of being left of the target and your shot making will improve. If you are checking your alignment on the course, put a club on the ground behind you and snug it up to your heels as this will truly show where your body is aligned.
