Tevye, the Dairyman, in Fiddler on the Roof said (actually sang) it best:
“Tradition…Tradition.”
Tevye’s village had their traditions and we at PebbleCreek have ours. One of ours is the annual Potluck Dinner on Christmas Day for those who must remain in our community on December 25. For twenty-five years, they know they have a good Christmas dinner to go to on Christmas Day.
This year, 144 residents and guests poured through the doors of the Eagle’s Nest Ballroom to enjoy a veritable feast. Residents had been assigned by our able leader, Susan Fallon, who took over this tradition from Jane Cook, who did a superb job for twenty-three years. Susan is working very hard to fill those big shoes and is doing a fine job.
So, mark it on your calendar. If you will be here with us next Christmas, come join us for a bit of tradition. Watch for Susan’s message to sign-up.
To commemorate the 2018 Christmas Day Potluck Dinner, our local poet has penned the following.
POTLUCK – A CHRISTMAS TRADITION – 2018
Every year on Christmas Day
There are many in PebbleCreek that have to stay
It is sad, you know, but there is no place for them to go
Thus was born the TRADITION of potluck on Christmas Day
2018 was the 25th Anniversary of the potluck dinner
Jane Cook ran them for 23 years, now Susan Fallon runs this winner
This year, we had 144 come through the Eagle’s Nest door
To partake together of the fabulous potluck dinner
The theme this year was “Silver Bells”
Musician Gene Fioretti played the song and we rang our bells
We sang the “12 Days of Christmas” which sounded more like a mess
Our drumming the table on 12 drummers drumming completed our Noels
Few people know the part of our tradition
About collecting money for the “Homeless Youth Connection”
We had cause to cheer since they got hundreds of dollars this year
Tis the season for giving and a part of our TRADITION
Laurie Overson performed her emcee duties well
Her calling the tables to get the food was swell
Especially since she called us soon after singing our tune
Of course, tables called in reverse for dessert was not so swell
As usual, our annual event was magnifique
We had fun and a good dinner and to make our mission complete
We celebrated the birth of Christ who made the ultimate sacrifice
For it is our TRADITION here in PebbleCreek
