Pet of the Month: An Interview with Layla the Golden Retriever

Layla

How long have you lived in Arizona?

Layla: I was born in Scottsdale in a kennel. I was kept for 4-and-a-half years as a breeding dog and raised lots of puppies.

That must have been hard on you.

Layla: Yes, I was pretty bored in my kennel. I chewed on the wire of my kennel and wrecked some of my teeth.

How did you end up in PebbleCreek?

Layla: When I was 4-and-a-half years old, a couple from PebbleCreek adopted me. My human mom passed shortly after that and my human dad, let’s just say, was not a dietician. He fed me too much and I gained a lot of weight. I weighed 92 pounds. When I was about 6-and-a-half, my human dad went to live somewhere else. His friend fostered me for about a year, but then she had to move too. She decided to find me another home in PebbleCreek.

How did she do that?

Layla: She advertised me on the e-group. Eight couples applied for my adoption. She interviewed them rigorously. There are very nice people in PebbleCreek willing to take an older dog into their family. I have been very lucky.

Tell me about your new humans.

Layla:  My new humans, whom I adore, are Mike and Sandy Stimola. They have four grown children (two boys and two girls) and twin granddaughters who are lots of fun to play with. The grown children come for visits and bring their dogs. We all get along great. I especially love the two little humans that run around really fast all over the house.

I notice you do not weigh 92 pounds now. What happened?

Layla: Mike and Sandy were concerned about my health. They had my teeth fixed and bought me special food so I could lose weight and be healthy. I feel much better now.

What do you do for fun?

Layla: I have my special toys. Mike takes me for walks and for rides in his golf cart. We also go to Utah and California to visit the grown kids and the twin little humans who run really fast.

Do you have your own bed?

Layla: I have a weird place I like to sleep. I like to sleep in the walk-in guest shower. I feel comfortable in there, and the tile floor is nice and cool. When I disappear, my human mom can always find me there.

Any more quirky things about you we should know?

Layla: I don’t bark. I’m a very quiet canine. I just don’t feel the need to bark, I can, but I choose not to.

Any more things we should know about you?

Layla: I’m just your typical Golden. I like my head petted and to be scratched under my chin. I like other dogs and I love humans.

So, life is good here in PebbleCreek?

Layla: Life is VERY good now!
