Dixie “The lucky undercover dog”
Hi, everyone! My name is Dixie the dachshund – AKA Lucky Undercover Dog.
One day when I was a young pup, I was undercover as usual under my blanket in my cozy crate with my favorite stuffed baby frog. Suddenly I peeked out from under the covers and saw a lady walking by. In a flash I ran up to her wagging my tail as fast as I could and looking at her with my soulful brown eyes. “Take me home, please,” my eyes were saying. I gave her a few puppy kisses when she petted me and smiled. It was love at first sight and in a few minutes my cozy crate, blanket, baby frog and I were on my way to my new home. Lucky dog am I!
The last ten years have been wonderful living with my humans, Sue and Joe Mullane. Because I love to be undercover, they gave me beds and blankets to cover up with in every room. They also give me lots of love. We have spent fun times taking walks, playing and traveling to all kinds of places in the RV. I even have a stroller to ride in which helps me to go places I might not ordinarily get to. When I pop my head out, people are so surprised.
One of the things I like best is letting my owners know what I want by my voice. I can make different sounds for food, bed, outside, toys, etc. They have learned to understand me. Over the years I also have had some great Westie friends that live across the street. We are thinking of digging a tunnel under the street so we can go back and forth when we want. I am so lucky that I get to stay with them when my humans are gone.
One day my humans were out shopping and I was hanging out at home. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw this huge rocker recliner that I had never been on. I knew better but it looked so warm and soft. I climbed up on it all the way to the top so I could keep an eye out on the world. I got so excited when I heard the car pull into the garage that I took a flying leap off of that recliner (forgetting I did not have a magic cape) and went splat on the tile floor. I screamed for help. They came and rushed me to the vet. My back legs would not work. I could not stand or walk or even go potty. Good news! Six weeks later, after a month in a crate and lots of medicine, I am 98% back, walking and running again; I sure am a lucky dog! When my owners are not around, I now stay safe in my bed under cover separated from furniture I can climb on.
I am getting older and I hope wiser. My muzzle and feet are getting grey and I am slowing down. I sure hope I still have lots more time to be with my humans and sleep undercover keeping one eye out to know what is happening in my world.
