Pet of the Month

KeeWee

I am told this story. When my mama and daddy lost their Sassy, they said they probably wouldn’t get another doggie. They wanted to travel and not be held back with the responsibility of taking care of another pet. After 17 months of pet-free life, I am told, Mama said to Daddy, “Ya know, I really miss lil’ Sassy.” Daddy agreed and said, “Yeah, but she can never be replaced, right?” Well, guess what folks, when they said that they hadn’t yet met me!

Alright, I’m a little self-centered; however, I will say, when they came to the shelter, they took one look at me and, without hesitation, said to the shelter agent, “We want her, we need her, we gotta have her!” Okay, maybe an exaggeration, but it was something like that.

So my parents, Kermit and Judy Frye, were so very lucky to find their Sassy look-a-like and although they called me Sassy a time or two, I understood. Ya gotta prove yourself, right? That was 10 months ago and I must say they are the smartest parents you could ever hope for. I’ve taught them to say words that please me—like “walk, ride, treat, I love you—it goes on and on”—none of this sit, stay, come stuff; I didn’t want to teach them that.

In any event, I rescued my parents from such a ho-hum life and yes, well, I guess you could say they rescued me, too. Win-win situation—we’re so lucky.

I try to remind them of Sassy whenever I can and I know they know that. I did not replace their Sassy—I just kept her memory alive for them. That’s just the kind of creature I am. I’m almost two years old, found a forever home and it’s all good.

I’ve never met a person that I just do not like.

I might shout out to cars and to folks on a bike.

But the yell that you hear is just a friendly shout.

And I want you to know that’s what I’m all about.

It bothers me a lot if you simply just ignore me,

Because all I only want is a friend of yours to be.

Other friends do I have but always want some more.

Some are the two-legged kind and some with legs of four.

One thing that is certain you can take to the bank;

I’ve gained all those friends and my parents I do thank.

So when I’m out a-walking and feeling oh so free,

I’d appreciate your pausing, saying “Good day Ms. KeeWee.”
