2022 is the sixth year that PebbleCreek resident Lucette Gurley, an octogenarian, entered the Kiwanis Litchfield Park Run. It is also the sixth year in a row that she has taken first place in the competitive one-mile run and been rewarded with a gold medal. Lucette began her quest for gold beginning in 2017, and upon winning her first race, she was hooked. This year’s race took place on Saturday, Feb. 26, and not only did Lucette compete in the one-mile race, prior to the race, she completed the non-competitive one-mile Fun Run/Walk. She currently trains by walking a mile twice daily; however, she sometimes has to adjust her training schedule because of her busy volunteer schedule. Abrazo Hospital recently recognized Lucette by awarding her with a pin for volunteering over 1,000 hours. When asked if she planned to compete in next year’s race, Lucette energetically replied, “You betcha.” No doubt she will be adding another gold medal to her count.
