The PebbleCreek Woodcarvers Club slowed down during the summer, but many members are busy completing projects or starting new ones. Here are two projects that are related to classes that will be taught during the new carving season.
The first example is a walking stick flute by Richard Schlotzhauer. Richard is one of several instructors who will teach a class on making Native American style flutes this carving season. This summer, he made a flute that also serves as a useful walking stick. The flute is made from western red cedar and is decorated with wood burning, leather, feathers, and paint.
The second example is a beautiful brown trout created by Lyle Chrisman, president of the Woodcarvers Club. Lyle will be teaching a class on carving an Apache trout in the same action shape this carving season.
If this has sparked an interest in carving, stop by the Quail Room in the Creative Arts Center to see current work and get to know the club members. You will find them to be friendly and helpful. Most members had no carving experience before joining the club, so all that you need is an interest in carving.
Prospective club members may sign up for the beginner’s class by Oct. 1 or Jan. 1, each year. The one-day class will focus on tool safety and how to carve a simple project. The class will be held around the middle of October or January respectively, and the cost is $25. Class attendees will then have the option to join the club if there is continued interest. However, club membership is open only to PebbleCreek residents. Contact Tom Wick if interested in attending a beginner’s class at 262-408-7355 or [email protected].
Regular carving classes are held from October through April. Club meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month, from October through April. The carving room is available for club members daily throughout the year, except for Thursday mornings when another club uses the room.
