Celebrating spring with a Burst of Music IX

Laurie Farquhar

A springtime favorite returns to PebbleCreek in March. A Burst of Music IX, featuring the PebbleCreek Big Band, is already in rehearsal with more than two dozen musicians and singers preparing to delight audiences with some of their favorite classic Latin, jazz and swing numbers.

Under the direction of Bruce Birnel, the Big Band will play the music of Glen Miller, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Perez Prado and George and Ira Gershwin. Other acts will also be performing but those names will be announced at a later date.

A Burst of Music IX runs only three nights from Thursday, March 31 to Saturday, April 2. All shows will be in the Renaissance Theatre starting at 7:00 p.m. Tickets will go on sale Saturday, March 18 from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. in the Renaissance Theatre. After that, tickets will be available at the Eagle’s Nest kiosk on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. and on Wednesday evenings from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. during karaoke.

So come join your friends and neighbors as they enjoy a springtime favorite of good music, singing and laughter presented to you by some of PebbleCreek’s most talented performers.

PebbleCreek Singers celebrate successful Christmas concert

Donna Swagger

PebbleCreek Singers finished the 2015 concert season with an unforgettable Christmas concert! Award winning concert pianist, composer, arranger and conductor Mark Hayes returned to PebbleCreek for the first two nights of the concert that paid tribute to his music. Last year he enjoyed the concert from his seat in the audience as a spectator. This year his role was that of conductor and concert pianist, a thrill to both the chorus and concert-goers.

Praises for the concert were abundant! Audiences commended Director Gail Kennedy for the choice of music, the complexity of the numbers that the chorus performed and the professional look and sound of the chorus. Attendees spent an enjoyable evening getting in the holiday mood! Director Kennedy and the chorus members extend their thanks to the PebbleCreek community for their overwhelming response and support!

The chorus is accepting applications for all voice parts, particularly basses and tenors. The audition process is simple and auditions are private. Anyone interested in auditioning may contact Nancy Gustafson (623-215-3292) or pick up an application form at the club information center in Eagle’s Nest Clubhouse.

Fresh from a five-week break, the choristers will assemble on Monday, January 11, at 2:30 p.m. in the Renaissance Theatre. At that time they will receive their music packets and practice CD’s for the annual spring concert. Performance dates for this concert are Wednesday, April 27 through Saturday, April 30, 2016. Watch for future articles in the PebbleCreek Post for program details and scheduled ticket sales.

Batter up for Damn Yankees

If you’ve been following baseball, you know the Arizona Diamondbacks are recruiting and signing up some major talent for next season. The same can be said for ShowTime Productions which just cast its team for the musical, Damn Yankees. The uniforms are on order and spring training has started as the full cast prepares for opening day on April 11.

Damn Yankees is the story of Joe Boyd, played by Doug Christensen, who has been a long-time fan of the Washington Senators and, in a moment of passion, says he would sell his soul to see the Yankees lose. This wish is quickly answered by the devil himself in the guise of Mr. Applegate, played by Steffen Jacobson, who makes a deal with Joe Boyd to make him a baseball hero for the mere cost of his soul.

Assisted by femme fatale Lola, played by Nancy Davis, young Joe Hardy, played by Gary Luders, gets to see his dreams come true but he’s not sure if the price is worth it. Young Joe is supported by a team of spirited ball players that are sure to sing and dance their way into the hearts of the audience.

The show is cast, but additional volunteers who may have experience or interest in learning, are needed for costuming, make-up, set building, and technical support. To get more information, check out the ShowTime website at www.pcshowtime.org or contact Producer Patti Wegehaupt at [email protected].

Damn Yankees will run six nights from Monday, April 11 to Saturday, April 16. Tickets go on sale Saturday, March 12 from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. in the Renaissance Theatre. This show is sure to be a sold out season and as they say in the biz, it is going to be a home run right from the start.
