PebbleCreek Singers Launch 27th Season
Donna Swagger
Starting their 27th season, the PC Singers are rehearsing vigorously for their annual spring concert. Performances are scheduled on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, April 25, 26, and 27 at 7 p.m. in the Renaissance Theater.
With three weeks of full-chorus practices under their belt, the Singers are ready to tackle the fine details of each song in the repertoire. February marks the onset of section rehearsals. Working with their section leaders to learn their specific voice part, the choristers concentrate on learning notes, tricky rhythms, and difficult passages. After this the individual sections unite for full-chorus rehearsal with Director Jerry Drake. The dedicated and diligent singers will settle for nothing less than their very best. Audiences have come to expect a top-notch performance, and the PC Singers will deliver!
“Love Is in the Air” features a wide variety of dreamy ballads, some pop classics, several patriotic numbers, some energetic and rhythmic gospel tunes, a humorous novelty song, and maybe a surprise or two! There’s sure to be one or more of your favorites in this great musical selection. Numbers will be performed by the full chorus, small ensembles, and soloists.
Mark your calendar for April 25, 26, and 27! You don’t want to miss this exciting performance. Dates and times of ticket sales will be announced in next month’s Post.
“Into the Breeches!” Is a Tender Comedy with Soul
Carrie Mataraza
Writer George Brant’s Into the Breeches! is a laugh out loud comedy with a lot of heart. In the six or so years since the script was written, this play has been performed all over the country including in summer stock and community theater productions such as ours here in PebbleCreek.
Into the Breeches!, PC Players spring production, will be on stage in the Renaissance Theater from Wednesday, March 6 through Saturday, March 9. That will come as fast as everything else has seemed to do this year, so I decided to read the play and sneak in a couple of rehearsal views so I could tell you about it.
First, I have to say I was into the story from the start. It’s about a small community theater in Provincetown, R.I., during WWII whose director is off to war. That means the Oberon Play House would be dark for the duration, but the director’s wife doesn’t want that to happen. She takes on the challenge of keeping the shows going with a group of women in town who team up with her to put on Shakespeare’s Henriad. Except for the theater’s diva, the women are not actors and most are new to performing, but they accept the challenge of playing men on stage, (Turnabout is fair play, right Shakespeare?) and they all vow to wow the town. What happens from there is a play within a play as we watch, laugh, and get caught up in the emotions.
But don’t take my word for it. Here are some actual quotes from both audiences around the country and some critics who have all seen …Breeches!:
* It’s hysterical and also deeply moving.
* I’ve never laughed that hard.
* So thought-provoking under the humor.
* This is a laugh-out-loud love letter to the theater.
* The codpiece jokes alone had the audience roaring with laughter.
* A really wonderful story. A smart script.
* A surprisingly modern and moving comedy.
* I’d like to come back again!
And the comments go on.
