PebbleCreek Singers on the Move

Diane Piehl

With the addition of five new singers, the PebbleCreek Singers began rehearsals in August in preparation for the annual holiday concert.

Holiday Fanfare takes to the stage beginning Wednesday, Dec. 1 through Saturday, Dec. 4. From the opening number to the closing number, you’ll be in the holiday spirit, tapping a foot or wiping a tear.

The chorus gathered for the Welcome Back Social on Aug. 22 at the Oasis Pool. It was a great opportunity to visit and reconnect for some who haven’t seen one another for some time.

We welcome our new singers, and PebbleCreek Singers has openings in the tenor, bass, and baritone sections. If you’re a vocal fit, PebbleCreek Singers is looking for you. It’s not too late to become a part of our musical family as we gear up for the holiday 2021 season. Contact Nancy Gustafson at 623-215-3292 for more information about your place in the chorus.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Comes to PebbleCreek

Laurie Farquhar

After an 18-month delay, one of Broadway’s most successful shows is finally coming to PebbleCreek. ShowTime’s long-awaited production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will transform the Renaissance Theater stage when it runs for six nights, from Monday, Nov. 15 through Saturday, Nov. 20.

This production was originally scheduled to open at the beginning of April 2020, but it had to be canceled just two weeks before the first performance. Now the cast and crew are getting back into rehearsals, working on the wonderful songs and dances that make this such a great musical. Director Carole Palmer promises this will be a full-scale production that includes all the zany characters, amazing costumes, and beautiful sets.

Based on a classic French fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast is the story of a heartless prince who is transformed into an ugly creature who must learn to love another person in order to escape his bewitched fate. Through singing, dancing, and colorful, outrageous outfits, the musical portrays the beast’s transformation with the help of Belle, a young woman trapped in his enchanted castle.

Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, Oct. 19. Expect to see more information about how to reserve your seats in a few weeks. In the meantime, be sure to make a note on your calendar about the show dates because this is “a tale as old as time” that you don’t want to miss.

Calendar Girls: Tickets on Sale This Month

Laurie Farquhar

Are you ready for some serious laughter? PebbleCreek Players’ upcoming show, Calendar Girls, is just a month away, and this heartwarming comedy is the perfect re-introduction to PebbleCreek’s outstanding theater community.

Calendar Girls will run four nights from Wednesday, Oct. 27 through Saturday, Oct. 30. This will be the first production by one of PebbleCreek’s resident performing clubs since the pandemic shut down the Renaissance Theater last year. During the closure of the theater, the actors have been busy learning their lines, while crew members have been working on the lighting, sound, costumes, and props. For the props manager, Marka Locker, it has been a labor of love, as she has designed, crafted, and/or gathered hundreds of items needed on stage during each performance. There is a giant teapot and matching tea cup, huge plastic sunflower necklaces, and a very large tower of “oranges,” just to name a few. Marka says her favorite creations are the “cherry buns.”

Tickets for Calendar Girls go on sale, both online and in person, at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29. It is reserved seating, and all tickets are $16.50, which includes the service fee, whether they are purchased online or at the box office. To purchase online, go to the HOA website at www.pebblecreekhoa.org. Click on “Things to Do” at the top of the page, and then scroll down to “Ticket Sales.” No login password is needed. Visa and MasterCard are accepted. Box office sales are in the Renaissance Theater lobby every Tuesday and Friday from 8 to 10 a.m.

Calendar Girls is based on the true story about a group of older women in England, who posed nude for a calendar, in order to raise money to purchase a sofa for the local hospital. Their calendar not only funded the sofa but has since raised millions of dollars for leukemia research around the world. Funny and uplifting, Calendar Girls is the ideal antidote after the past year.

Auditions Scheduled for Showtime’s Spring Show

Holly Carrier

Showtime’s spring 2022 production, We’ll Sing in the Sunshine, will be on stage in the Renaissance Theater from April 4 through 9. This show tells the story of singing and playing music in Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, New York in the 1960s. This park was a popular site for up-and-coming entertainers to hone their musical talent and learn from some of the pros who were also there. Numerous well-known folk and pop singers were first heard performing there, as people spending time in the park enjoyed the music and participated in the fun.

Auditions for this show will be held on Oct. 21 and 22 in the Tuscany Falls Ballroom from 5 to 9 p.m. The show offers many opportunities for singing and playing folk music and some pop tunes, as well as a narrator role and a spot for a comedian. There will be lots of ensemble singing, and the music will be live. Don’t be discouraged from auditioning if you do not play an instrument, since there will be a backup band to accompany you.

Audition packets will be available to pick up in the Activities Office from Patti Wegehaupt beginning on Sept. 10. In the packet will be a CD for your use, if you don’t play an instrument, as well as a form for you to complete. If you are accompanying yourself, you won’t need the CD, but everyone will need the form. Your audition time will be scheduled once we have received the forms back from you. Further instructions will be found on the form. We are looking forward to having a lot of fun and sharing some great music with our community.

Newcomers Meet the PAC

Melissa Kallett

It’s been a long year and a half since you’ve had the opportunity to see your resident performing arts groups on the stage, but they are all gearing up to bring you music, vocals, and theatrical performances in the coming months. As a precursor to those events and to introduce you to, or to reacquaint you with, their talents, the Performing Arts Council (PAC) is hosting a night of karaoke featuring all genres of music, with an emphasis on tunes from Broadway and the movies. This entertaining evening will be held at the Tuscany Falls Ballroom on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. In addition to providing everyone the opportunity to sing their favorite show tunes, each of the Performing Arts Groups—the Musicians, Singers, Players, and Showtime—will provide a short overview of what they do and invite you to join their groups, with details on how to do that.

So, mark your calendar and plan to attend. Make the Tuscany Falls Ballroom your Broadway stage and join the fun as you belt out show stoppers such as “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables, “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady, or “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” from Evita. Join up with your friends and get everyone doing “The Time Warp” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, or perform a duet of “Summer Nights” from Grease.

There’s no cost to attend. The bar will be open for your beverage purchases. Come experience what you’ve been missing with all the COVID closures. Watch the PebbleCreek Post and the HOA website to learn of the upcoming PAC production dates and ticket information. It will be a season to enjoy!
