Members of the PebbleCreek Democratic Club left the summer doldrums behind for a few hours on August 7 to attend the Herberger lunchtime theatre’s inspiring production of My Beloved World, based on the memoir by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
The play recounts Justice Sotomayor’s turbulent childhood growing up in the projects in the Bronx and the loss of her alcoholic father at the age of nine, after which she was raised by her mother. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of seven. In spite of these personal challenges, she graduated from Princeton with her bachelor’s degree in history and then completed Yale Law School. She was admitted to the New York bar in 1980, was appointed to the U.S. District Court in 1992 and the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals in 1998. She is the first Hispanic and third woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, where she has served since she was appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in August 2009.
After the wonderful performance of James E. Garcia’s play, the club lunched at 1130 The Restaurant at the Arizona Center, engaging in a lively discussion. For more information about our organization, please visit http://www.pcdemclub.org/myclubhouse.php?c=19 and click on the Membership Form.
