PebbleCreek Community Comes Together

Joan Knight

When a community works together, we can move mountains. In April, the Goodyear Planning and Zoning Commission recommended permit approval for a 24/7 Circle K convenience store and diesel refueling station, with semi-truck parking spaces. This facility was to be built on Indian School Road and 166th Avenue, adjacent to the wall by the new PebbleCreek (PC) pickleball courts/multi-purpose sports park and hole 3 of Tuscany West. The land for the sports area was gifted by Mr. Robson, and he provided additional funds to build this recreation center for our residents. The Pickleball Club also raised nearly a half million dollars to contribute to the facilities.

A resident became aware of the Committee recommendation, and that the permit was scheduled for a vote by the Goodyear City Council at the end of April. PebbleCreek came together to defend the health and welfare of our residents. Before the vote was held by the City Council, phone calls and emails started to flow between our residents and City Council. Residents were concerned about the detrimental health effects from diesel pollution, noise from 24/7 truck fueling as well as deliveries, gas station pollution, and possible increased crime. It became apparent this requested permit was not harmonious with the total surrounding area. Many homeowners were concerned that if this were approved, it would negatively impact the health of PebbleCreek residents, negatively impact the enjoyment of our homes, as well as preclude the use of our new sports park.

A group of residents researched the problems that diesel refueling and convenience stores bring to a neighborhood. The wheels started moving, and more than 1,000 residents signed a petition requesting that the City vote to deny the diesel refueling station/truck parking. Up to 500 emails and letters were sent to the City Council. PebbleCreek residents packed two Circle K homeowners meetings. Residents wanted to be heard, and it all came down to the rescheduled June 26 City Council meeting. It is reported that nearly 180 residents showed up, with approximately 23 asking to speak during the council meeting. During the meeting, Mayor Pizzillo announced that Circle K withdrew the entire project. It was a great relief for many in PC. We are blessed to live in a community where people are willing to stand up and support our neighbors, as well as future residents. Great thanks are owed to those who joined the effort, gave time to research the issues, inform others, gather signatures, signed the petition, wrote to the City, attended meetings, and spoke out. It was a caring community effort and was supported by our HOA Board and RCI.

It is so true, you never know what you can accomplish until you try! One last thought: we need to stay vigilant and involved. We hope that Goodyear continues to grow in a manner that  will never harm our health, safety, or welfare.
