The 2024 PebbleCreek Mah Jongg Tournament was held on March 7 in the Tuscany Falls Ballroom, continuing an 18-year tradition for this event. Headed by co-chairwomen Sue Branton and Rose Johnson, players from across the community gathered for a day of enthusiastic camaraderie and friendly competition.

The American style Mah Jongg was played under the guidelines of the National Mah Jongg League rules. Thirty-six players put their skills (and some luck) to work scoring points during each of the six rounds, earning cash prizes for high rounds, special hands, and the first Mah Jongg in both morning and afternoon sessions.

The tournament winners were:

1st PlaceElaine Carlson, $250

2nd PlaceSandy Burris, $155

3rd PlaceJan Mart, $105

4th PlaceThelma Svoboda, $80

5th PlaceLynette Webber, $50

In addition to a monetary award, the first three winners received a “Golden Ticket” to the Mah Jongg World Championship Tournament in Las Vegas.

Delicious homemade muffins made by Sue and Rose greeted the players in the morning, while later everyone enjoyed a luncheon of chef salads, croissant sandwiches, rolls, chips, and a delicious dessert of berry tarts, all served with beautiful presentations and an attentive staff. Hats off to our wonderful food and beverage crew for the set-ups and lunch.

In the afternoon, Maureen Jones provided homemade cookies, which paired nicely with the coffee, tea, water, and lemonade available throughout the day.

Sue and Rose wish to acknowledge and give a special thanks to our volunteers. Sue Adams wrote the computer program for all functions of the tournament. Kathy Weldon greeted and checked in all the players. Alex Potapoff, who was our tournament rules guru, answered questions and kept players within their time limits. We could not have made this happen without you!

Please be advised that Sue and Rose will be hosting three more tournamentsJune 20, July 11, and Aug. 29all located in the Tuscany Falls Ballroom. These tournaments will not only involve PebbleCreek residents but will also be open to players from the surrounding areas. Please mark your calendars for these fun and challenging competitions held right here in our own backyard.
