The PebbleCreek Al-Anon family group, which has been meeting on Tuesday evenings in the Capri Room, will be moving the meeting to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Old Litchfield Road beginning in October. The first meeting will be on October 7 at 7:00 p.m.
Al-Anon is a program to support friends and family members of alcoholics, whether the alcoholic is in recovery or not. It is not a program to help you stop your loved one from drinking, or keep them from relapsing. The group’s purpose is to support those who live or have lived with the consequences of the family disease of alcoholism.
The PebbleCreek group has been meeting every week since November, but those attending feel like a group with more critical mass would be helpful and, therefore, decided it would be beneficial to meet where we can draw from elsewhere and add diversity to the group. A spokesman for the group said, “PebbleCreek is such a small and intertwined community, some who might otherwise attend Al-Anon meetings may not come because they are uncomfortable about meeting with only people from PebbleCreek. But we have all been there and we understand the awkwardness of attending that first meeting. And it gets much better very quickly.”
“For every person who attends an AA meeting, we know there is a friend or family member who could benefit from the support and encouragement offered by Al-Anon. And we know there are people who live with constant anxiety about loved ones who live elsewhere and have dangerous addictions.”
Those with friends or family with drug addiction issues are welcome to attend as well, as the principles are the same in both cases.
Those who have lived with the problem of alcoholism (or drug abuse) understand, as perhaps few others can, how difficult it can be to live with or care for someone who abuses alcohol or drugs. Al-Anon is a program that helps its members to place their situation in its true perspective as well as build confidence and serenity, improve attitudes and create a healthier environment. Attendees are welcome to speak but are not required to and there are no dues, but we do accept contributions which help to pay for materials used in the program.
If you think that Al-Anon can help you, please consider attending one of our meetings. At the meeting you will find people who share your experience and offer strength and hope to each other. For more information, call 623-293-8972.
