Erv Stein
While the mass exodus of our PebbleCreek Men’s 9-Hole Golf Association (PCM9GA) snowbird golfers has reduced our summer event participation, 74 of our highly charged participants teed off in a surprising temperate environment on the morning of July 3 in our Match Play Tournament at our Tuscany West Front Nine Course. Match Play Golf is true head-to-head competition between two players, and golfers win holes by taking fewer strokes for each hole played than their opponent. Specifically for our 9-hole event, clearly a 5-4 score for 9 holes would win but as it turns out, tie scores commonly occur such as 3 strokes to 3 and 3 tiers. Tie breaking winners were determined by the prevailing AGA handicaps of each golfer.
Kudos to all of our Match Play winners as follows:
Lennie Leibowitz, Matt Jungles, Keith Anolick, Charlie Lowe, Ron Froemming, John Craven, Ray Clements, Don Burrows, Derrick Doud, Don Troxell, Erv Stein, Tony Sacks, Ken Laychak, Frank Chop, Chuck Busker, Bob Brett, Trevor Ballinger, Keith Stumpp, Bill Priebe, Joseph Olliver, Bill Lansing, Randy Prinz, Phil Stegmann, Dale Knutson, Bill Gray, Ken Whitney, Bernie Bangert, Richard Johnson, Gregory Strike, Brian Wentz, Steve Schwartz, John Ward, Kerry Walsh, Terry Worwa, Mike Meyer, David Robertson, Kurt Kleinknecht
In addition, congratulations to our 5 Closest to Pin and Longest Putt Winners:
Keith Anolick: Longest Putt—Hole 9
Lennie Leibowitz: Closest to Pin—Hole 3 Red Tees
Matt Jungels: Closest to Pin—Hole 3 White Tees
Charlie Lowe: Closest to Pin—Hole 5 Red Tees
Brian Wentz: Closest to Pin—Hole 5 White Tees
After the tournament, we all gathered at the Oasis Pool for an early brunch barbeque consisting of juicy hot dogs with garnishings and so forth. Once again kudos to Sy Rosenthal, Don Paxton, Ron Froemming, and Kurt Kleinknecht for sharing their extraordinary culinary skills as barbeque chefs. Likewise, the great planning and facilitating efforts of Peter Herman, Sy Rosenthal, Ray Clements, and Ron Froemming assured the overall success of this event. Also, both Bill Lansing and John Mazzukelly and our other pairing team members are to be commended for their truly outstanding pairing execution, which continues to ensure a level competitive playing field for all of our events. Unlike our previous July Independence Day events, we did not conduct a “Best July 4th Costume Contest” but a few members did nevertheless show up with quite distinctive attire.
Even with the mass departure of our many snowbird members, our PCM9GA continues our weekly events with quite high participation, including our May 29 Odd-Even Tournament, the Ryder Cup event on June 12, and our June 26 Lone Ranger event. Our exciting July 17 Step-Aside Scramble will be followed by our Aug. 14 Par 4 event and then the Aug. 28 Two Low Net contest. Our PCM9GA membership continues to soar and is currently at 402 members. We encourage prospective PCM9GA members in our exceptional, fun-loving, low-key group of golfers to contact our membership chairmen: Tim Munson at 503-460-7618 or Dusty Howard at 805-218-6461.
