On January 23, 2018 188 PCLGA members were pretty in pink as they “Gave Cancer the Boot” by raising $4,103.00 to donate to the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Co-chairs Corrie Copple and Vicki Norrie put together an awesome tournament and after a short frost delay it was a wonderful day for golf at Tuscany Falls. This is one of the members’ favorite tournaments of the year as it’s one where you create your own foursome, contribute to a good cause and play solely for bragging rights rather than monetary prizes.
Money to fight cancer was raised in numerous ways. For example: 29 golf groups and individuals created and donated beautiful gift baskets. Members bought raffle tickets and winners were drawn at the luncheon after golf. Members also made a donation to put the name of a friend or relative who was a cancer victims and/or survivor on a pinwheel. Pam Volm and her husband, Bill Volm, created a beautiful and colorful honor garden of those pinwheels out on the putting green before tee-off and then brought them into the ballroom so they could be enjoyed during lunch. There was a 50/50 raffle in which half of all proceeds were donated. Members made additional, generous cash donations.
After golf, a lovely lunch of a croissant sandwich, chips and a cookie, was served in the Tuscany Falls Ballroom where tables were decorated with gorgeous handmade flowers. In addition to the basket raffle and 50/50 awards, all cancer survivors in the tournament were asked to come forward and were honored with a rose. It’s always heart-warming to see how many women have battled this disease and are back out there playing golf!
The format of the tournament was a four-person scramble and the winners in each of the six flights were the following:
Flight 1 (Tie score of 58.7): Sharon Hadley, Barbara Patrow, Layne Sheridan and Kathy Hubert-Wyss; Kittie Day, Liz Mitchell, Claudia Tiger and Karen Poturalski
Flight 2 (Score of 58.2): Donna Monk, Joanne Pollock, Judy Newell and Patty Brown
Flight 3 (Score of 60.3): Leslie Lowery, Vicki Ray, Carol Taylor and Tess Braden
Flight 4 (Score of 57): Kathleen Nelson, Lynn Matousek, Vicki McLaughlin and Genneth Hunter
Flight 5 (Score of 55.9): Valerie Bobigian, Deb Smedley, Marilyn Holland and Mary Rollins
Flight 6 (Score of 59.5): Maria Murray, Sue White, Judy Layton and Kathleen Carney
Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone who donated time and money in the fight against cancer.
