Steel Magnolias coming to PebbleCreek in October
Laurie Farquhar
When the play, Steel Magnolias, premiered in 1987 in a little theater off Broadway in New York City, it became an overnight sensation. When it was made into a movie two years later, some of the biggest stars of the time hoped to be cast as one of the six main characters. Bette Davis, Kathryn Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor were just a few of the major actors vying for roles. Since then, this hilarious and poignant comedy-drama has been performed on Broadway and to audiences around the world. What is it about this play that appeals to its devoted fans? Is it the hilarious one-liners sprinkled throughout the show or the incredible bond that these women nurture? Is it the unbreakable love between a mother and a daughter or each woman’s unique Southern charms? You can decide for yourself when PC Players presents Steel Magnolias this October.
Set in Truvy’s Beauty Spot, the finest beauty salon in Chinquapin Parish, North Louisiana, Steel Magnolias is about the deep friendships that six diverse women develop and who pull together whenever one of them needs help. They offer love and support for each other as easily as they exchange recipes. They laugh, they cry, they poke fun at one another and in the end, they draw strength from their relationships.
PC Players’ production of Steel Magnolias will run only four nights from Wednesday, October 17 to Saturday, October 20. All tickets will be $16.50 and will go on sale starting Tuesday, September 18 at 8:00 a.m. Tickets can be purchased either in the Renaissance Theater lobby on Tuesdays and Fridays, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., or online through the PebbleCreek HOA website at www.pebblecreekhoa.org. No login is necessary. Just go to the Home Page, click on “Things to Do” and scroll down to “Ticket Sales.”
Playwright Robert Harling wrote Steel Magnolias as a tribute to his sister who died from complications of Type 1 Diabetes after having a baby. He intended that it be a dramatic play but when it opened on stage, he saw how his characters used “laughter through tears” to cope with life and death situations. Funny and sad. Those are the emotions that PebbleCreek audiences will experience when this award-winning show comes to the Renaissance Theater. Don’t forget the tissues!

Opportunity Knocks: August
PC Singers
Have you been to a PebbleCreek Singers concert and thought, I’d love to do that, but felt intimidated by the quality of the performance? Perhaps you told yourself, I’m probably not good enough or I don’t have the right stuff. Give yourself more credit and consider the opportunity to sing with the chorus. During the month of August feel free to pick up an application across from the Eagle’s Nest pro shop. Then complete and reach out to Nancy Gustafson, who will arrange to meet with you. She’ll listen to your voice and place you in the part most suitable to your vocal range. She’ll also give you materials to help you through the process. All voice parts are open at this time, so come on, try it. Bet you’ll love singing with your hometown chorus!
