Summer hiking around Phoenix can be challenging so PC hikers leave early and finish before the real heat of the day. On August 14 seven hikers headed west to hike around Saddle Mountain, visible south of I-10 at Tonopah. Although it was hot and humid because of monsoon season, the hikers found nice shade in this cleft on the north side of the mountain. The hiking club hikes five days a week during the regular season, September to April, with a hike for almost every level of fitness and challenges the Arizona summer with two exploratory hikes a week during the summer. Visit the club’s website at pchikers.org for more information and pictures.
Hikers go rim to rim

August temperatures can be intimidating but for backpacking in the Grand Canyon, you take advantage of campground reservations when you can get them. So on August 20, five hardy PC hikers headed to the South Rim for the first night of a 35 mile, five day foray at the Grand Canyon, spending nights at South Rim, North Rim, Cottonwood, Bright Angel and Indian Garden campgrounds and making the strenuous trek up Bright Angel Trail back to the South Rim on August 25. The Hiking Club meets in the Tuscany Ballroom on the third Thursday of the month and hikes five days a week. Visit the club’s website at pchikers.org for more information and pictures.
Joshua Trees in Arizona
Pete Williams
Seven PebbleCreek Hiking Club members journeyed north of Wickenburg to find some Joshua Trees in Arizona. Notice the Saguaro on the left and the Joshua Tree on the right in the picture. This is one of the few locations where Joshua Trees and Saguaros live side by side. Normally Saguaros live in the Sonoran Desert and Joshua Trees live in the Mojave Desert. This happens to be an area where the two deserts merge. Club members see many unusual sights on their hikes. The club meets the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Tuscany Falls Ballroom. For more photos and information about the club please visit our website at pchikers.org.
