Hiking the Skyline Segment
Ann Rohlman
Eleven intrepid hikers drove north to hike the Skyline Segment of the Black Canyon Trail system. Walking down to Horseshoe Bend, we crossed the Agua Fria River, stepping on river rocks to cross with dry feet. Then it was up the other side to generous views of Black Canyon City, Table Mesa, and mountains to the west. On the return, we stopped at the blue rocks for a photo. If you look carefully, there is a black cow hiding in the river bend. Join the PebbleCreek Hiking Club and select from 12 hikes offered each week at various levels—from EZ hikes of fewer than 3 miles to A hikes of more than 12 miles. Hiking Club Celebrates Octogenarians
Ruth Bindler
Nearly 50 members of the PebbleCreek Hiking Club recently met in Goodyear Square to walk, socialize, and honor the members of the club who are 80 years and older. You can imagine the impressive accomplishments of these members; many have hiked thousands and tens of thousands of miles with the club. Large groups of hikers joined them for the morning. Come join the club to stay in shape and see beautiful sights in the surrounding areas. Visit our website at pchikers.org for more information.

Eagletail Mountains Swansong Hike

The 100,000 acre Eagletail Mountains Wilderness area is located along the western edge of the Harquahala Valley and is accessed via I-10, Exit 81, just 45 miles west of PebbleCreek. Although the last few miles require driving on a rough, unpaved road, the area rewards hikers with scenery comparable to portions of the Superstitions without the hassle of driving through Phoenix. On Feb. 26, eight “B” hikers started at Courthouse Rock, an impressive monolith rising to almost 2,900 feet, and enjoyed an 11-mile, scenic adventure loop through interesting washes and colorful rock formations, including ancient petroglyphs and lunch with an impressive view from unusual double arches. The Eagletails have been a favorite hiking area for years for Gary Bray, one of our Canadian snowbirds, but unfortunately, for family health reasons, Gary has moved back to Canada and this hike was probably the last opportunity to hike one of his favorite areas.
