Hikers enjoy a Saturday hike

Lynn Warren

Start your weekend with a hike and be home early! The club has been offering relatively easy, relatively short close-in hikes on Saturday mornings for the last year and turnout has been impressive, even during the summer. On a clear, sunny July 20, eleven hikers enjoyed a 6.8-mile loop in nearby Estrella Mountain Regional Park and were home by 10:00 a.m. The moon was still visible during the hike, quite appropriate since this was the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon. The trails in the park are shared by hikers, bikers and riders, and the hikers struck up a conversation with a frequent rider and her steed who were later invited to join the group photo. The club hikes extensively around the valley with shorter, easier hikes such as this on Saturdays, suitable for most levels of fitness; visit the club’s website at pchikers.org for more information and pictures.

Hikers find tunnel in the Prescott forest

Pete Williams

On August 3, members of the PebbleCreek Hiking Club did an exploratory hike on the new trails in the Iron Springs area of Prescott. One of the trails happened to go through an old tunnel. The tunnel was originally put in to allow rain runoff under a road but was made tall enough to allow hikers to also pass through it. Only recently did they create a formal trail to connect it to the rest of the nearby trails. Prescott is a great place to escape the heat of summer with an average elevation above 5,000 feet and lots of pine forest to explore.

The club does exploratory hikes during the summer in order to expand the list of trails for the club. The next club meeting will be September 19 at 7:00 p.m. in the Tuscany Falls Ballroom.
