Forty-one hikers from the PebbleCreek Hiking Club took a trip to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon March 27 through 30. This group of 15 hikers did the Hermits Rest Trail on the first day of the trip. Pictured left to right are Linda Vaughn, Glenn Doering, Pete Williams, Diane Doering, Alex Elijew, Dennis Zigmunt, Charlene Elijew, Atsuko Arner, Joe Clarkson, Sandy Mednick, Art Arner, Nadine Eder, Roger Sanders and Ann Rohlman. Jan Sherwood was the photographer. The views were spectacular and the weather was better than we expected at this time of year – sunny and in the 60s each day. The club’s regular season goes from the last week in September to the first week in May, with meetings on the Thursday of each month (September through April). Views of the Grand Canyon from the South Rim are always beautiful but experiencing the inner canyon from below the rim is extra special. On March 27, over 40 club members headed north for four days at the Grand Canyon. The first afternoon was windy and even included a brief snow squall but the next two days, contrary to forecasts, were ideal. Seven “B” hikers took advantage of the conditions and completed two very strenuous but extremely rewarding hikes below the rim. The first hike was approximately 14 miles—descending the steep Kaibab Trail, crossing the plateau to Indian Garden on the Tonto Trail and climbing 3,000 feet out on Bright Angel. The next day’s hike was only nine miles but required descending the even steeper Grandview Trail to Horseshoe Mesa where the group enjoyed lunch on the edge of the mesa with 180 degree views of the inner canyon before working off lunch by climbing out another 3,000 feet on the steep trail.
