In 1922, Dennis and Carl Deem established a homestead near the hills which comprise the park which today is known as Deem Hills Park, north of Loop 101 and west of I-17. On April 20, eleven PebbleCreek hikers enjoyed an interesting eight-mile hike on several trails within this nearby park. There are numerous trails and elevation challenges in the park which can be combined in various combinations to match the abilities of different categories of hikers. The club enjoys interesting hikes such as this all around the valley, as well as occasional overnight trips to more distant areas. The club hikes five days a week during the regular season and checks out new trails during the summer; visit the club website at PCHIKERS.ORG for more information and photos.

On April 15, nineteen members of the PebbleCreek Hiking Club did a hike on the Constellation and Willow Lake Dells trails in Prescott. This is a very unusual area where they mark the trails with white paint because the trails go through and over a large area of granite boulders. Hiking that day were, front row, left to right: Art Arner, Charlene Elijew, Nancy Love, Atsuko Arner, Ruth Bindler, Diana Bedwell, Jan Sherwood, Beverly Kim, Kay Thomas, Dana Thomas, Mary Hill, Lynn Warren (photographer) and Bill Baxter. In back were Mark Frumkin, Dennis Zigmunt, Pete Williams (hike leader holding Flat Stanley), Alex Elijew, Steve Duncanson and Jim Gillespie. If you have a first grader in the family, you might know who Flat Stanley is. During the regular season of September to May the club does hikes all over the valley and as far as Prescott and Sedona. Check out the club’s website pchikers.org for more information and pictures from our hikes.

On April 17, Alex Elijew reached 2,000 miles hiked in the PebbleCreek Hiking Club on a hike in the Goldfield Mountains. The trail was the IQ Arch and Helmut Rock Loop and Alex happened to be the one who spotted a Big Horn Sheep on a nearby hillside. As you can see from the background, Helmut Rock and the surrounding area are very colorful. Hikers that day included (left to right) Lynn Warren (photographer), Clare Bangs, David Geurden, Wayne Wills, Alex Elijew, Mark Frumkin, Pete Williams (hike header), Joe Clarkson, Sandy Mednick and Charlene Elijew. The club’s regular hiking season runs from mid-September through the first Friday in May. The next meeting will be September 15.
