Bill Halte, the PebbleCreek Hiking Club’s career leader in miles, hiked passed 6,000 miles on March 30 during a hike in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale. Bill, one of the originators of the club, has been hiking for many years but the club has only been tracking miles since 2004. Toasting Bill for his accomplishment are Tom Wellman, Roger Sanders, Kay Thomas, Dana Thomas, Pete Williams, Alex Elijew, Bill Halte, Clare Bangs, Charlene Elijew and Lynn Warren.
The club hikes several times a week between September and May. Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month (September through April). Check out our website at pchikers.org for more photos and information about the club.
On March 26, to conclude a three day, two night hiking trip to southeast Arizona, 20 members of the PebbleCreek Hiking Club did a hike in the eastern section of the Saguaro National Park. You might notice the strange looking Saguaro in the upper left portion of the photo; it’s a rare Crested Saguaro. One evening the club enjoyed a wine tasting event at the Coronado Winery in Wilcox. The club usually does a couple of overnight hiking trips each year to places such as the Grand Canyon, the Chiricahuas and Palm Springs. We offer three levels of hikes during our regular hiking season of September to May. For more information and photos about the club, please visit our website at pchikers.org.

PebbleCreek Hiking Club members venture outside the valley on overnight hiking trips several times a year and on March 24 through 26, traveled to southeast Arizona to hike the popular Sabino Canyon and Chiricahua National Monument. Sabino Canyon was very busy but Chiricahua New Mexico was much less crowded and the hikers had plenty of time to enjoy close up views of its impressive hoodoos, balanced rocks and other interesting rock formations along the Big Loop. The club hikes five days a week and meets on the third Thursday of the month and has hikes for most levels of fitness; visit the club website at pchikers.org for more information and photos.

April 3 was a sunny day and perfect for hiking the challenging Hangover Trail in Sedona. Although primarily a test of skill and nerve for cyclists, this trail is also a popular but difficult trail for hikers and one certainly would not want to undertake this hike with a hangover (actually, the trail is named for some overhanging rock formations). The hikers made it to the saddle on Mitten Ridge safely, enjoyed a leisurely lunch in the sun and returned to the trailhead via the tamer Munds Wagon Trail. The club conducts interesting hikes five days a week for almost every level of fitness; meetings are held in the Tuscany Ballroom on the third Thursday of the month. Visit the club’s website at pchikers.org for more information and pictures.
