The PebbleCreek Democratic Club is sponsoring a Hawaiian Dinner Extravaganza to raise funding for Hayden’s Hope Totes, which is a nonprofit organization that provides duffel bags to foster care children to put their belongings in when they enter the foster care system. The date for this fundraising event is Thursday, October 19, 2017, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Tuscany Chianti Room.
Children and youth enter foster care because they have been abused, neglected or abandoned by their parents or guardians and are unable to continue living safely with their families. All of these children have experienced loss and some form of trauma.
Since June 2016, more than 18,000 Arizona children are living under the state’s supervision. These children reside in foster homes, group homes, with relatives or, as a last resort, shelters.
All children in foster care have been exposed to some form of trauma. The very act of being put in foster care is traumatic for children, because it means the loss of their birth family and often friends, schoolmates, teachers and everything that is familiar.
Making matters worse, children are taken away with only the clothes on their backs. When these children are removed from their homes they are given a paper bag or pillow case and told to bring only their most valued possessions.
While the state Department of Child Safety and state officials have an obligation to help these kids, there are many things everyday Arizonans can do. What can you do?
By supporting the event, you will enjoy an evening socializing with your friends while enjoying a dinner along with Hawaiian music throughout the evening. For your dinner you will be able to choose one of three different entrees, (1) Huli Huli Chicken, (2) Mahi Mahi, or (3) a vegetarian selection of Portobello Mushroom stuffed with white rice.
This is a completely non-political fundraising event to show support as a community and make a few lives a little better.
