Make sure to get your Arizona Travel ID if you plan to fly

If you travel by air, Oct. 1, 2020, is a very important date, when in Arizona only, an approved travel ID (driver license or ID card), a U.S. passport, and other federally-approved identification will be accepted at TSA airport security checkpoints for domestic travel.
The travel ID complies with the REAL ID Act and acts both as a driver’s license and identification card.
In the meantime, all Arizona driver’s licenses and IDs are valid for air travel until Oct. 1, 2020.
The new travel IDs are voluntary and can be obtained through the state Motor Vehicle Division (MVD).
A gold star in the upper right corner of a driver’s license designates the card as a travel ID.
The voluntary travel IDs cost $25 and are valid for eight years.
The IDs are available at all MVD locations and authorized third-party driver license providers.
Obtaining the voluntary travel IDs must be done in person. Approved documentation such as an original birth certificate, social security card, and proof of current address are required.
One can begin the application process by visiting http://azdot.gov/travelid on the web, which also includes a complete list of approved documents and all the authorized third-party driver’s license providers.
As noted, the travel ID is voluntary, and you can opt out if you prefer. But be aware that your ID will not be applicable for federal identification and it will not be a valid ID for air travel.
