Agie Olmedo, Robson Reserve at PebbleCreek
One of the greatest privileges of serving our older adults is witnessing the incredible legacy they continue to build. Whether it’s volunteering, mentoring, supporting a neighbor, or simply sharing a lifetime of wisdom, giving back doesn’t stop at retirement—it often becomes one of life’s most meaningful chapters.
While many of us spend time planning for retirement, vacations, and family gatherings, one of the most important gifts we can give our loved ones is preparing for the “what ifs.” One topic that frequently causes confusion is the role of a Power of Attorney (POA).
A common misconception is that once you designate someone as your Power of Attorney, that person immediately begins making decisions for you. In reality, that is generally not how it works.
In most cases, you continue to make your own decisions unless and until you are determined to be unable to make them yourself, depending on the type of Power of Attorney and the language contained within the document. Simply moving into a senior living community does not mean you lose your independence or your right to make your own choices.
At Robson Reserve at PebbleCreek, we want every resident—and every family—to understand this important distinction. Our residents remain in control of their own healthcare and personal decisions for as long as they are able. A Power of Attorney is not intended to take away someone’s independence; rather, it is designed to protect their wishes if a time comes when they can no longer speak for themselves.
Equally important is choosing the right person to serve in that role. A Power of Attorney should be someone you trust to advocate for your wishes, communicate effectively, and make decisions based on what you would want—not necessarily what they would choose themselves. Having these conversations early can prevent confusion, reduce stress for families, and ensure your voice continues to be heard.
As part of our commitment to education and community involvement, we invite PebbleCreek residents to join us for two special events on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
