Spring Cleaning for Downsizing

Jessica Dingman

One of the most popular concepts talked about in modern living recently is something called minimalism. Whether it’s in reference to homes, decor, or even the number of things we own, minimalist ideas are sweeping the nation. The idea of minimalism is simple—own less, so you can do more. If you’re considering moving into a senior community and will be downsizing, adapting the minimalist concept is the perfect way to help you decide what to keep and what not to keep. With spring right around the corner, it’s the ideal time to declutter and downsize, so you can start doing more of the things that you enjoy.

Take a look at our top tips for spring cleaning for downsizing.

1. Start small. The key to decluttering your home is to start small. Often times, we try to start projects by taking on everything at one time. Instead, it’s better to pick one room at a time and create a list of what your goal is for that room. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when we instead try to think of everything in the house as a whole.

2. Decide what’s really important. When it comes to what stays and what goes, try to think of the pieces that you couldn’t go without. Do they have a function, purpose, meaning, or story? Often times, we hang onto items that we may need in the future, but that time never comes around. Try to only hang onto the items that we use in our everyday life, the things that we really couldn’t do without.

3. Use the “year” rule. The “one year rule” can be a great tool for deciding what to keep. Keepsakes and arts aside, take a look at the items in a room. When was the last time you used it, sat on it, or wore it? If it’s been over a year, it’s probably time to let it go. That sweater you bought two seasons ago, because you might use it for a trip in the near future may not be worth keeping after all.

4. Make “yes” or “no” piles. Sorry “maybe,” there’s no room for you here! It turns out that maybe really sidetracks our minimalist journey. When it comes to deciding what to keep, it’s good to make a yes and a no pile and to truly stick to our decision.

5. Consider your new place. If you’re downsizing to a senior community, consider what your new residence may be like. If you know you’re going from four bedrooms to two, you may no longer have a use for the items in your two other bedrooms.

Whether you’re looking to move into a senior community for independent or assisted living or just looking to get ahead on some spring cleaning, these tips will help you get ahead of the game.

At Robson Reserve, we offer low-maintenance living, so residents can spend more time enjoying our resort-style amenities and less time keeping up on home repairs. With options for both independent and assisted living, we’ve got something for everyone.
