Move over, Cupid!

It turns out that Valentine’s Day has been around way before your time. Did you know that Valentine’s Day has been celebrated as early back as the fifth century? If this shows us one thing it is that love is undoubtedly timeless.

This February 14 celebrates Valentine’s Day. The holiday is rooted in a Roman traditional festival called Lupercalia, which honors the beginning of spring. Around the 14th century, the Lupercalia festival was renamed St. Valentine’s Day, which evolved to be a day dedicated to acknowledging romance. Cupid, the Roman god of love, didn’t come into the picture until the late 1800s.

More recently, Valentine’s Day has expanded to include showing affection for friends and family members as well. Valentine’s Day is traditionally celebrated by adorning your valentine with flowers, gifts and delicious desserts.

Speaking of dessert, we all know that nothing says Valentine’s Day like chocolate, so take a look at this delicious recipe for chocolate truffles from Martha Stewart for a sweet treat this Valentine’s Day!

“Love me Some” Chocolate Truffles

Ingredients

1 can sweetened condensed milk

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/2 cup heavy cream

3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Directions

1. In a medium saucepan, bring condensed milk, butter and cream to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring until butter melts. Cook, stirring frequently, until mixture thickens slightly and turns pale golden, 4 to 6 minutes (do not let it get too dark, or mixture will separate). Remove from heat; let stand 5 minutes. Add chocolate, cocoa powder and vanilla, stirring until chocolate melts and mixture is smooth and combined. Transfer to a pie dish or a wide, shallow bowl and refrigerate until firm, about 4 hours.

2. Scoop 1 tablespoon of chocolate mixture into your palm and roll into a ball. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet; repeat with remaining mixture. Feel free to get creative by rolling in edible decorations of your choice – like heart-shaped sprinkles!
