The first meeting of the new year for the Men’s Christian Fellowship of PebbleCreek (MCFPC) is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 a.m. in the Tuscany Falls Chianti Room. The MCFPC is a group of more than 150 Christian men that meets the first Wednesday of each month through April. Dr. Peter Gurry, Director of the Text and Canon Institute at Phoenix Seminary, will be the guest speaker with the topic, ‘How Can We Trust the Bible with So Many Translations?’
Dr. Gurry joined the Phoenix Seminary faculty in 2017 after completing his PhD at the University of Cambridge. He teaches courses at the seminary in Greek Language and New Testament literature. His academic interests range across the history and formation of the Bible, Greek grammar, and the history of New Testament scholarship. Dr. Gurry’s role as Director includes overseeing the Institute’s vision, mission, and strategic initiatives. The Text and Canon Institute at Phoenix Seminary illustrates the history of the Bible through church resources, research, and mentoring. The Bible is the best selling book of all time and according to the Text and Canon Institute website became so following Martin Luther’s translation of the New Testament from Greek to German 500 years ago in 1522.
Dr. Gurry has written for popular and academic outlets, published four books, and presented his research at conferences in the U.S. and Europe. He and his wife have six children and are members at Whitton Avenue Bible Church, where he is also an Elder.
The December Fellowship meeting began with a breakfast and was followed by a presentation by Dr. Allen Sawyer who recounted his faith journey as a part of his 25-plus years of service with the Samaritan’s Purse. In addition to monthly meetings, the MCFPC features outreach activities including traveling to St. Mary’s Food Bank in Surprise. For more information, contact Jim Sykes at 614-395-4907. Weekly bible studies are also held each Tuesday morning at the Chianti Room annex at 8:30 a.m.; more information can be obtained from Neil Smith at [email protected].
