Dawn Harvey
Sally Coon, President, Rug Hookers Club
Meet Dawn Harvey! Dawn and her husband Dave moved to Goodyear, Ariz., in 2004 with their son who then attended Millenium High School, to escape the long Wisconsin winters. Their daughter followed suit and transferred to ASU from a Wisconsin college. In December of 2019, Dawn and Dave moved to PebbleCreek. In January 2020, the Creative Arts Center had an open house for new homeowners and here Dawn was introduced to the Rug Hookers of PebbleCreek. She was a quilter and was intrigued with the long-arm machine in the quilting room for sure, but she was not familiar with our craft. However, after watching people working on their rugs she was “hooked.” Dawn was still working at the time, but once she retired in 2021, she immediately joined the Rug Hookers group and hasn’t looked back, although she is still a quilter, stitcher, and does applique.
Dawn’s rug (pictured) is her first completed project after the club’s educational project. Dawn is very much a perfectionist and her rug shows it. She practiced much of what we call “reverse hooking,” wondering if the colors were right and taking advantage of the expertise of other members of the group to make sure that she chose the right colors, hooked in the right places, to make a rug that she is, rightly so, very proud of. Dave, her husband, was also instrumental in selecting the right colors that coordinate with a framed mirror that hangs in their hallway above the rug on the floor in the entry way of their home. Yes, it’s okay to walk on the rug! It is such a pleasure to have Dawn as a member of the Rug Hookers, she is a real asset to the happy camaraderie of our group.
The Rug Hookers put up regular displays in the Creative Arts Center windows, showing rugs made by many of our members. We meet every Monday from noon until 4 p.m. if you would like to see how we do what we do. We always love introducing new people to the craft that we love. If you have any questions, call Sally Coon, president, at 714-812-7353.
